Description Information about the picture

This is probably the picture I'm most proud of right now in my gallery. First I used pastel sticks, but when I got to the finer details my boyfriend gave me pastel pencils so I could do some great details. It really made a difference for the piece

The pose has been referenced. I don't have a link to the internet but I got it out of the square book called 'fascination horses' page 181.

I found the photo on the internet: [link]

I have two main reservations about the issue - one is the lighting. It seems that the lighting is coming from all sorts of directions, and I'm not quite seeing a unity there. The back is lit up, but so is the front. A single light source often helps add realism to an image.

Two - the anatomy. The legs appear curved and the animal very much off its center of balance. I can see that it's doing the little quick-step trot that would do that, but the lighting/leg form of the back leg closest to the viewer makes it appear bowed inward, with the hoof facing out. The left-most front leg is curved in a way that makes it appear that it's shifted away from the viewer which is something that the horse could not physically do.

The overall impression I get from this image is that multiple references were used. One for the head, one for the body, at the very least.

I think you have done a good job with the coloring and shading of this image, and with adding a dynamic background to it. Just a couple snags, tis all.

About the light..

I see what you mean. Especially at the belly and the neck... stupid mistake...

I used some different colour refs to try to get the colour to look accurate... And in the process I forgot a bit about the shade. I'm trying to move away from using a single reference anyway now.

Otherwise it would be like re-producing the photograph...

And about the legs, you are absolutely right. At first I only wanted to upload a scan of his face and back, but ~Ponytail insisted on uploading this version instead of the other one... So I finally did...

Thank you for taking the time to comment/critic here :] It's much appreciated...

I really need to watch out with the shade... I have another piece and I already see a mistake in there... with the shading...

I agree. It's much more interesting to draw once you've moved beyond using a single reference and when your hand and mind has more practice drawing the shaped.

You're very welcome; I'm glad I could offer something in my comment. Good luck drawing!

Sometimes it stays nice to use a single reference for the pose (it is easy at least...) But when I do that I now at least make it a different colour, or change something else on the work... to move it away from the photo....

I'd start with sketches, until your hand gets in the habit of drawing. Small steps - like artists who draw figures over and boringly over again.

I just need to add a bit more attention to the sketch before I start colouring So the proportions and poses are absolutely right...

Thank you!

But I did this one with pastels, I started with a soft pastel set, those squar sticks and in the middle of the process of this drawing I got pastel pencils (carbOtello) from my boyfriend, so I used those to do the details...

But thank you for your comment!
