Description EDIT: I was told at SDCC 2008, that this cover never saw print as it was supposed to. I found out later that wasn't true. Also the original art mysteriously disappeared while in the hands of the company owner, Jeff Kaufman. Along with many other originals that we artists were never reimbursed for (which was in our contracts). Never work for a lawyer, folks!

PENCILS BY ROB DORIA
INKS BY DIANA GREENHALGH

One of the covers for issue #5 of the new vampire series Tempest from Big City Comics. Tempest #5 hits shelves March 2008, and starts a 6 issue run by artist Tommy Castillo.

This was my last cover ink for 2007, and my first for this series. Since this was in Previews last month I figured it was safe to post.

It was done entirely in crowquill except for Tempest's hair (brush), the fur of the werewolves (brush), and his belt buckle (technical pen).

Had quite an adventure getting it sent in, from pulling an all-nighter to traveling to the US to ship the cover because it was a holiday in Canada (so Fedex wasn't shipping there) so that it would arrive in time to be coloured and lettered for the Diamond solicitation. I was awake for over 36 hours.

Materials:
- bristol board
- brush
- crowquill
- technical pen
- ink

inks are great but the pencils really let it down (not your fault of course) - that backwall and arch just looks...bad...

I would have embellished more on the wall but it was the last thing I did and I was so tired my boyfriend had to keep nudging me awake (I inked this from 1pm on a Sunday to 7am the Monday morning because of power outages). I finished it, put it in a Fedex box, went to take a nap, and discovered my parents had gotten up and wanted to leave like right then and there >_< So I didn't get a chance to add any more to it lol.

that looks awesome - everything so precise, like every line was drawn with the utmost care and thought. I like how you show your inks side by side with the original pencils.

Awesome work! Good job bringing the background-wolf's face forward a little more with your use of blacks. I know the fur must have taken hours, excellent job with that! Very dynamic, I hope to see more soon!

Actually the fur was the easiest part I'm a brush inker, so its easier for me than the parts using a crowquill

You know I may have asked this before, but how do you get your inks to scan so well? Whenever I scan a finished inked piece it seems like I lose some of my edges and it's not quite the same.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mechangel2002 In reply to self-replica [2008-01-14 20:16:27 +0000 UTC]

You're the first person to ask that question cause almost everyone says my scans are horrible compared to the originals

My scanning method: I scan in 3 pieces instead of 2 (to avoid the gray area in the middle of the page) at 400 dpi. I hold the scanner lid edges down so that I get a crisp scan around all the edges and no grey areas in the middle where ink might have warped the page a little. I make sure one of the long sides of the page is lined up along the side of the scanner bed the whole time to make it easier for the pieces to line up in Photoshop when I'm done. Then I put them together in Photoshop, trimming out the grey edges to line up the pieces. Adjust levels so they're even in tone, then flatten the image when its all lined up as close as I can get it. Then I crop off any sides that show the scanner bed still (cause for some reason my scanner shrinks my scans by like 5%) and resize the image size back to the actual page size (11x17 inches). When I did my Tempest pages we had a particular Photoshop process we had to use to get the inks prepped for colour (which is why these scans look the way they do).

self-replica In reply to mechangel2002 [2008-01-15 17:33:40 +0000 UTC]

Well there's nothing like seeing originals of course, but my scans really seem to change alot from the originals. That process seems really time intensive o_o but I think it looks good personally.

I just scan @ 300dpi, crop to size of the page, then adjust levels to remove any grays, then threshold. I'll have to remember your process and try it once and see if I can get it right, then see which I prefer. Thanks alot ^^

mechangel2002 In reply to self-replica [2008-01-15 23:23:21 +0000 UTC]

Well it takes me about 5 minutes to scan the whole page in, 5 minutes to line them up in photoshop, 5 minutes to do the processing that I had to do on the Tempest pages to prep them for colouring, and then 5 to 20 minutes of cleaning up cause sometimes I had areas that showed through my white correction ink, etc.

I get lucky with some pieces that really turn out the way I want, but I was actually thinking about this last night. After looking at a bunch of inkers that I look up to who have recently joined DA, I remind myself that I have a long way to go.

Great line, Diana. If my feathering capabilities were half as good as yours I'd be a happy man.

ps...I just noticed that this is for Big City Comic. I just sent them a submission a few days ago. How are they as a company to work for?

mechangel2002 In reply to dubbery [2008-01-14 20:32:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Gary I keep meaning to ask you do you do any traditional inking? I'd like to see what you can do I've only been using Crowquill and brush since fall 2005.

p.s. they're awesome

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

dubbery In reply to mechangel2002 [2008-01-15 00:14:57 +0000 UTC]

I can ink tradtionally but prefer to ink digitally. I think I've inked more digitally so I'm more comfortable with Illustrator.

dub

ps...cool. hopefully I'll get a call back from them. They pay a page rate?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

mechangel2002 In reply to dubbery [2008-01-15 00:18:23 +0000 UTC]

Ooooh I thought you were just digital (sorry >_o ) But can you get that kinda control over the feathering in Illustrator?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

dubbery In reply to mechangel2002 [2008-01-15 00:22:33 +0000 UTC]

Sure you can. There are alot of ways to create lines in Illustrator: make a brush in the shape of the feather line and stroke it along a path and or pen tool to manually create the line just to name a few. I prefer to stay as traditional as possible and brush the stoke myself. That's why some of my feathering is a little off at times lol

Ohhh I thought your feathering was with the pen tool The last time I tried to use AI I crashed the mac I was on XD

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

dubbery In reply to mechangel2002 [2008-01-16 15:59:33 +0000 UTC]

I do use the pen tool plus a brush I created to do speedlines, focus lines and stuff like that. But I keep the figure lines all digitally hand brushed. Which version of Illustrator were you usuing?
