I picked up a pen few weeks ago and did a little concept art for one of H.P. Lovecraft's stories called In the walls of Eryx. It's the only pure sci-fi story he ever wrote, actually he didn't write it on his own, he collaborated with much younger aspiring writer, which is what he did frequently. That's one aspect of his work that makes him so interesting, aside being one of the most influential horror writers he was also prolific mentor for beginner writers.

Also one of key elements of this story is humanity colonizing another planet and mining some magical bullshit mineral, that is a great source of energy and in the process get in conflict with an indigenous tribe of aliens. Sounds familiar? If you watched the first Avatar it probably does. I'm not saying Avatar ripped this story off, it's just funny coincidence, that I haven't seen brought up anywhere.

So, here we have concepts of the human protective leather suit paired with the cumbersome and heavy Carter oxygen mask a flame pistol and of course the lizard-man alien tribesman.
