Description
EDIT: apparently this is my 500th deviation. I'm pretty sure it isn't, because I've cleaned my gallery a few times. And the award for the worst name goes to me. This beast is from the game Axiom Verge, which is quite possibly the best metroidvania game on Steam. And it was done by a single person. Incredible.
Needless to say this piece took forever to do. Download for a full size (warning- it might be too big for you to handle, the picture is huge).

While it might not be the best one imo, for me that title goes to Hollow Knight, AV is a very close second.
It looks amazing, with a lot of brilliant details (especially for a retro-styled game, those tend to be lazily made and use the style as an excuse), the gameplay is wonderful with lots of unique and creative mechanics, and the soundtrack is just as amazing (got a soft spot for good synth).
And of course, your wonderfull fanart captures the feel and awesomeness of the title. A truly magnificent job.

To each their own I guess, it's good we can at least agree to how impressive AV is ;3
And I still find your fanart very impressive.

Yep, we can definitely agree on that But don't get me wrong, Hollow Knight is an impressive game, I'm just not the target audience.
Thank you for your kind words.

I haven't seen that movie, so no wonder I didn't catch that. Thank you for clarifying that.

I just finished it. Game was majestic.
But i doubt it's the best Metroidvania on Steam... Ori and The Blind Forest to me is superior, you know.

Personally I didn't like Ori that much. It simply goes down to personal preference.

Perhaps the fact that I created the body with spamming exactly one segment with slight modifications here and there. The same applies to the turrets and fins. But drawing each individually would take forever (not that the before mentioned method didn't).
But as long as the final product looks good (and it does) I'm okay with it.

Absolutely phenomenal, I can only imagine how much fun (and how painful) fighting this thing would be.
Never heard of Axiom Verge, perhaps I should give it a chance :>

Actually you don't fight it. It actually fights on your side during the final boss fight, and yes, it is quite epic.
However there is a great deal of ambiguity in the behaviour of the Rusalki (that's what these things are called), so if we get a sequel, I wouldn't be surprised if you actually got to fight it.

Yes great picture.
It was a pretty fun game; you spend your time collecting upgrades and more powerful weapons and all that, and then in the end you're rewarded with the greatest weapon of all: a flying battleship, bristling with rows upon rows of heavy artillery. Pretty cool.

Yes, it was a fun game indeed. Especially when you got your hands on the flamethrower. The last few bosses (especially the sentinel) felt a bit anticlimactic though.

I'd agree. You could just walk past that first boss repeat. But that Sentinel was pretty hard though...

It was hard only because of the nearly unavoidable damage. Cheap shot.

Not my favorite but yeah, it was kind of fun; I only died a couple times. I thought it was kind of interesting that you had to just focus on hurting it faster than it hurt you. Also I think the door was left unlocked and it doesn't heal when you leave, so if you're smart you can leave some of the robots in the previous room glitched harmless but intact...

The thing is that unlike the other fights you don't really have to figure anything out. Every other boss had some sort of weakness or pattern that you could exploit. This fight essentially boils down to "shoot and hope the boss dies first". You can try to dash through the bullets, but given the nature of the fight it's entirely possible to dash right into a projectile. It's challenging, it's intense, I give it that, but it's just not as rewarding as the rest.
Wait a minute. Was the door really unlocked? Now I'm intrigued, I'll have to look this up.
EDIT: As it turns out you cannot leave the room. That only applies to the boss before.
