This piece really caught my attention; it mesmerizes me, and even though I'm not friend of arachnids, I find this photo beautiful and something I could stare for quite a while.
I like the mysterious, slightly dream-like atmosphere. The spider seems to be reaching to the light from the deep shadows, which gives nice symbolic supplement to the picture - this is something one could write a story of.
The composition of the picture is good, tough the spider's front body in the middle doesn't work that well. The contrast between the top left and bottom right corner works great here as the spider's legs balance the value differences just enough.
I wish the spider's silhouette would be sharper. Now the focus is more on the web, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, tough.
Overall the picture is wonderful.

I think you are right about the centering of the body, I will have to go back to the original image and see if there was some reason I made that choice. It is a bit to half and half. I see what you mean about the web as well. If I recall, I have another photo in which the focus is on the spider, but I think I did end up deciding that bringing in the "step into my parlor" atmosphere had more impact. I have found photographing her to be highly difficult sometimes! There are a lot of choices to be made about how you deal with focal point and aperture due to the overwhelming amount of depth to the web. There is just too much interesting stuff in the scene! Thanks very much for the critique. I am planning on exposing her to the camera again tonight! Very helpful.
