She is DONE!!!! Need to take a few pix, and then I will post. This takes an enormously long time since everything is done from scratch. Will post soon! But seriously, a 2 month turn around time is pretty damn good since that also includes all of the tanning and skin preparation.

Cant wait to see that tiger done by the way it is refreshing to see such a unique pose. who did the tan on the tiger? i have never seen a place take them in and I always see them sold raw unless theyre super vintage rugs or something.

Yes, yes he is! Tiger is now complete, finished photos coming as soon as I get the camera out! As for tan, that's all me with a large trash can and a lot of chemicals! Actually I have never sent anything out for tanning, everything we do is in-house, forms and all.

Wow, no doubt. I never knew tigers could BE diabetic lol I did get my hands on some vintage leopard, that I bought on ebay thinking it had papers. It didn't x.x so I consider both me and the seller quite lucky I got it.

Yep, we have to be careful with our degus at college- they can't have raisins! It's because they're desert animals and are adapted for low nutrition amounts

Oh gosh, same here... I'm trying so hard to find the money to start! What I've been doing is going around and collecting roadkill and salvaging any parts I can from it. Skulls and skins sell for a pretty penny if you can get them lovely looking!
(If you live in north Florida, though, shoo. I'll be territorial.)

Haha, nah, I'm in Texas.
The start up cost is tremendous, but it will be so worth it. I really mainly want to collect various pelts, but if I get one that I want to mount, I certainly will.

ihaveamooseinmyname In reply to Redd-wulf [2013-10-11 02:50:49 +0000 UTC]
Texas? You've got all sorts of animals right at your fingertips! Florida is the land of the tiny and venomous.
If you find pelts that you're interested, be sure to ask about payment plans. Like for me, I just bought a pelt recently for $500. That's expensive as balls, right? Nope! Because I'm paying in increments. It just means less other fun things for me during the month
You can also look at "cheaper" methods, or methods for doing things at home. I do my own tanning thanks to this guy here:Β www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC6vGMβ¦
This man is also a god when it comes to taxidermy, so be sure to check him out:Β www.youtube.com/user/ojaivalleβ¦
They've both got some tips and methods that will save you a bit of money in the end.Β
Also, you don't have to have "professional" tools. Honestly, I skin my little babies with a boxcutter or an unloved kitchen knife and they turn out no different.Β
Okay, that's enough of my useless information there, haha

hahaha! If you say so! I've got plenty more where it came from
Not to gloat or anything, but my girlfriend and I came across an extremely fresh raccoon that got hit on the road. He's a little scraped up from being thrown against the pavement, but unless you look really closely you can't tell, and BOY is he lovely. I'll take a picture and post it at some point!

I'll have to check out the videos, always wondered how mounts were made. I can't wait to see the finished product! You always have such awesome pieces! When I get back home from college I plan to picking up a few feathers from you.

Lovely! I continue to get some pretty interesting species.
As for the video, I am putting a lot of effort into the documentation on this one. I need clients to be able to understand the prices I charge. Most people really think something like this should only take a weekend or so... Everyone has "an uncle" that does taxidermy, but there is a hell of a difference between commercial taxidermy and custom artistic taxidermy. That and most people really don't hang around their uncle's shop anyway.
There are no catalog forms used here... all sculpted from scratch!

TaranJHook In reply to Meddling-With-Nature [2013-10-08 12:49:42 +0000 UTC]
I'd love to know how to do taxidermy, or at least preserve my own pelts. I saw a video on youtube a while back, a kid was using a mixture of egg whites and mayo and it worked, kept the skin nice and soft and everything. I have yet to try it on my own, but I plan to when I get back home and start hunting again.
I've always wondered what the forms are. When I was little and used to go over one of my uncle's who hunted deer, I thought it was the actual deer head on the wall and wondered why it never rotted, haha. Then when I learned that were molds under the skin, I thought they were like, Styrofoam or something.
I'm in the same boat as you doing costume work with my friend, people don't understand how much time and work (and patience) goes into hand sewing 15ft. of gold cord and 40 buttons on to a coat. Things like this take a lot of time. Unfortunately a lot of people undersell themselves just to make sales because other people do it, then when you have someone who prices their stuff properly people freak out and think it's too expensive. People don't know what goes into it, they just know they hand someone money, wait a few days and poof, there's the finished product. I definitely give a lot of credit to people who do custom work like this. Looking forward to seeing this video when it's done!

Meddling-With-Nature In reply to RaptorFeather [2013-10-08 05:10:15 +0000 UTC]
They may just be hidden... There is a really interesting growth in the artistic industry. If there isn't one now, then I reckon you should take it on! Not saying its quick and easy... but we really need more artistic taxidermists to start altering the public opinion of natural arts in general. There was a huge rift created in the US (for a number of reasons) from the late 1800's to today. A lot of it has to do with a take off in the "frontier style", the naturalist style seemed to wither and die. Well, rather it digressed into simple macabre nostalgically driven pieces of limited technical value. That is not at all the case in Europe. Having said that, there are a ton of AMAZING commercial taxidermists out there who just so happen to make their living doing deer heads. I cant go that route because of both my art ethics as well as my overall "message" about naturalism. I need to make it through art, or not at all. Of course a Tiger certainly makes people take me a bit more seriously.

RaptorFeather In reply to Meddling-With-Nature [2013-10-08 05:14:00 +0000 UTC]
Yes, ever since I joined the taxidermy community on deviantart it has always turned into a passion of mine. Ever since I was little I would look at the wings of a dead flicker and see how beautiful it was, and I wanted to keep that beauty forever. I see taxidermy snipes that have been on earth for over 100 years, which is crazy! I would love to do bird taxidermy, it's very tedious but fun. People definitely don't take me seriously when i show them my collection... And when I find dead birds xD I have a house sparrow in the freezer I'm going to try.
