Description
“Come now, my dears.” Ursula beckoned them both around her cauldron, which opened up like a pair of large jaws. Various other jars and bottles still hovered around them. Belle looked at some of the ingredients inside. There were grotesque-looking sea plants, twisted sea creatures that looked either to be in pain or else as if they had had their brains removed, and even what looked like a human tongue. She swallowed hard and touched the jar in her pocket that held Giselle. Maybe Ursula had been planning to use her as an ingredient for something.
She caught Cinderella looking longingly at the ingredients, probably thinking of all the times she had made potions like this in the past, the most evil ones in all the world most likely. It was hard to imagine, however, seeing her beside Ursula, that she could be more evil. Ursula was truly terrifying in both appearance and vigour, that is the energy with which she threw all the ingredients into the cauldron. There was a large burst of purple smoke and even Cinderella shielded her eyes.
“What are you doing?” Belle ventured.
“Oh, this is perhaps one of the best spells in all the Seven Seas,” Ursula crooned, spreading her fingers over the potion as it bubbled and hissed. She didn’t stir it with a ladle or spoon, Belle noticed, but the ingredients swirled together even so, turning from purple to acid green. Then, as the smoke began to engulf their vision, Ursula began to sing.
“Yes, the Coven once thought that they were the greatest,
“Yes, their magic could out power even me!
“But now that they’ve all but gone
“You’ll find that I’m the one
“True mistress of the art of sorcery – dark? Yes!”
Belle flinched. Cinderella’s eyes, however, were dark and hungry. For one ghastly moment, Belle thought they were about to join forces against her, and then what would she do? But then she realised that Cinderella was obviously looking forwards to finally unleashing her powers on the Sea Witch when she least expected it.
“And it’s fortunate that you’ve both found yourselves here,
“You can see me at the height of all my fame –
“To see the last Coven witch fall
“Is the sweetest thing of all,
“So it’s time to put an end to this whole game!”
Belle blinked and glanced at Cinderella. Their eyes met, and for the first time since she had been brought back to life, Belle realised that Cinderella was scared. The last time she had looked like that was when Chernobog had stripped her of her immortality. Ursula turned and Belle saw the evil gleam in her eyes too late to react. With one final burst of smoke from the cauldron, Ursula seemed to swell and expand, growing and growing until-
BOOM!
The Serpentine cave exploded and Belle and Cinderella were thrown back, covering their heads with their arms to avoid being hit by fallen debris. Cinderella gasped. Belle lowered her arms to see that Ursula was growing even more so now, shooting upwards so that soon she would break the surface. Belle and Cinderella shot out of reach of her tentacles and aimed for the surface too. This was not the way they had expected the plan to go. As they felt the cool air on their faces, they heard Ursula’s song ringing out for everyone nearby to hear.
“You’re both just Poor Unfortunate Souls!
“Do you think I’m a fool?
“How could I ever forget the one who froze me long ago?
“Now let’s see which witch will rule!”
On the shore, Adam, Tinkerbell, HenWen and Carpet watched aghast as the gargantuan octopus woman finally stopped growing.
“Ya Poor Unfortunate Souls –
“It’s sad but true –
“I was always one step ahead, watching your moves all along,
“Yes I have to admire your resolve, she’s especially strong-!”
She pointed at Belle, who flinched again. How on Earth could they defeat the Sea Witch now? Was it the right time to unleash Cinderella’s powers?
“But now Cinderella, it’s goodbye, so get back where you belong!”
Cinderella scowled.
“You Poor Unfortunate Soul!”
“Back where I belong?” Cinderella shouted. “You’ve got some nerve, Sea Witch!”
“Oh, I’ve got some nerve, have I?” Ursula boomed over them all. “You two came to my cave pretending to want to learn dark magic from me, and you say I’ve got some nerve?” She waved her hands over them, spreading her fingers. Belle knew she was casting a spell and automatically grabbed Cinderella’s arm to pull her back beneath the waves.
“Look out!”
“Get off me!” Cinderella hissed, jerking herself free.
“Beluga, sevruga, come winds of the Caspian Sea!
“Currere, Verticis, Accessio, Charybdis, I summon to me!”
Belle knew enough about the roots of words to know what was happening. She fumbled for the potion in her pocket but Cinderella was already streaking ahead through the water. What she was planning to do against a giant Sea Witch without her magic, Belle had no idea, but she knew they both needed to get out of the water now.
“Cinderella! She’s creating an undertow!”
(Short chapter, I know, but I was low on time. The next one should be up soon!)
