Description
Well, who knew that after 1.5 years, I'd make a physical model of one of my concepts? And what better model to start than the tank destroyer which started the series? The Jagdtiger I is a fictional combination of the Tiger I hull and a superstructure resembling the actual Jagdtiger, carrying the Pak 43 cannon used by the Nashorn and Elefant tank destroyers in what would roughly be the same time frame. The proposition explored the ability to carry a stronger gun to counter the appearance of IS heavy tanks on the Eastern front, and maintain tough armour to withstand hits. This allowed the forces to have a replacement and complement the low numbers of Elefants in service. The camo on this one is inspired by the ambush pattern in the later stages of the conflict. Though successful in terms of offensive capabilities, the heavier weight and large gun put additional strains on the burdened suspension and transmission, limiting its offroad ability. With the exception of the turret, many components were recycled and reused from stocks, with some variants using the commander cupolas from the turrets as well as similar ventilation and optics setups.
Used a Revell 1/72 Tiger for the hull, borrowed the cannon from an Airfix King Tiger and scratchbuilt the superstructure.

I wish my friend was in DA. He would surely love to see your artworks!!! He's a Tank fan and everything military. He could name nearly every single WWII tank out there. When I see him in person, I'll definitely share this with him!

Very good model! I have a 1/76 Konigstiger I built up - made in Austria and with a similar fixed square turret. I have a Haynes book on the Tiger and especially the one brought to UK and restored for a museum. It only shows one variant with this type of turret and it had a very short big bore gun (I could say more if I could find it!!!). Very interesting tank anyway and with all those wheels must have been a nightmare to fix.

Thank you! I've built a couple of other models since I have started this account but the pictures I took are not presentable enough, on the cutting board with tools all over. With the current setup in terms of lighting I find it much more presentable and I think I should add others from the collection.
With regards to the model, this is a Tiger I hull, whereas the Konigstiger is the Tiger II hull, much closer in appearance to the Panther series. To my knowledge, there was no short-barreled cannon on the Tiger II, and the square superstructure for that hull was on the Jagdtiger variant (of which Bovington has a copy, and two different variants of Tiger II turrets). The square turret is actually a fixed structure and only the gun pivots a few degrees left/right and up/down. On the other hand, Tiger I hulls were built into the Sturmtiger variant featuring a monstrous 380mm mortar. They most certainly were an immense pain to repair in the field, with all the mud and whatnot caught in every nook and cranny between the roadwheels!

Ah thanks - that has answered a question my Haynes Manual didn't. as for maintenance - with all those wheels to remove to get at inboard ones or torsion bars it must have been a nightmare!

Glad to provide an answer! That said, the nitty-gritty of Wehrmacht armoured development has a ton of little-known projects, of which I am not very familiar! Maintenance must indeed have been a pain!

huh, this is what a Ferdinand would look like based on a Henchel Tiger
it actually looks like something that could fight at Kursk, great job dude

Funnily enough, I did consider at one point to have a Ferdinand superstructure on a Henschel hull with a mid-engine layout, but ultimately dropped the idea because it would look way too much like the existing version. Coincidentally, the drawing of the idea has Kursk-inspired camo, so there's that

I see
is that a rheinmetall 88 is has there? because i've seen rheinmetall producing gun masks like that

To be honest, I'm not very familiar with the cannon variants produced for the Pak 43. I do know that the Pak 43 is a Krupp design, but in terms of production versions I'm afraid I couldn't distinguish between the Krupp or Rheinmetall variants, much less if they have early/late models! For what it's worth, the cannon was taken from a Tiger II kit, so this particular model is in theory carrying the KwK 43 version, but that's as far as I'm aware!

now that's how i thought it may be rheinmetall, because i remember rheinmetall producing the gun for henschel's "king"

Nice design of this. Kinda curious why they never tried a Jagdtiger on the Tiger I Chassis.

I don't think there would have been a practical purpose to it. The Ferdinand/Elefant already carried the cannon at a comparable level of protection and mobility, and the lighter Jagdpanther and Nashorn provided better mobility at the expense of some protection. The Jagdtiger itself was built in very limited numbers and suffered from numerous problems. Similarly, there were only a handful of Sturmtigers built. That said, the closest possibility would've been mounting the cannon on the Sturmtiger hull, of which there are a number a images and models floating on the web. I chose to deviate a bit further from that idea and go with an actual Jagdtiger-inspired superstructure.

The gun being a smaller scale looks more like a 75mm L/70. I'd rethink that part of the model and look for an aftermarket 88mm PAK 43 barrel in brass. It probably would not have the muzzle brake.

That was my primary concern throughout the build. I had to settle on that King Tiger kit due to availability, and wasn't confident on taking the Kwk 36 from the Tiger kit and extending it with styrene. Regarding brass barrels and aftermarket, I haven't dabbled too much in that direction and cannot invest that heavily in a single project... Of course, I could sweep it under the rug by claiming that the Pak 42 was also evaluated (it's a what-if after all, and it wouldn't stretch matters all that much!), but I'm hoping that to the untrained eye it isn't too much of a strain!
I would love to give this another shot in 1/35 (or 1/16, one can dream!), where the 72/76 issue would not exist, but that will have to wait

The airfix kit is a good one but this mix in scales never results in anything accurate, unfortunately. Put it on the back burner until you have the aftermarket item.

The local hobby store I visit doesn't stock RB Models or Aber detail sets, so I'll have to check elsewhere. Since both companies are from Poland it might be a bit tricky. Thanks nonetheless!
