Description First appearance: All Star Comics #8 1941

Created by William Moulton Marston and H.G. Peters

In prehistory, Hippolyta was a cave woman and daughter of Ares. When her mate failed during a hunt, the pregnant Hippolyta tried to comfort him. Outraged by Hippolyta's pity the caveman slew her, committing the first violent act against women. Thousands of years later, the goddesses of Olympus saw the cruelty of man grow and from the soil and waters of the Aegean Sea brought life to a new race of beings called "Amazons" to bring light to mankind using the souls of all the women that died at the hand's of man. Hippolyta was the first to emerge and was made their queen. Hippolyta's reign brought about a golden age of peace. But her father, Ares grew hateful towards Hippolyta's people and sought to destroy them. He caused his half-brother, Herakles to attack and destroy the Amazons. However, Hippolyta broke free of her restraints and the Amazons slew their captors. Having fallen to the depravity of Ares and been enslaved by mere mortals, the goddesses exiled the Amazons to a new, hidden island to guard Doom'd Doorway, the entrance to the realm of Lord Hades. There Hippolyta once more created a paradise, but a horrid pain soon ravished her body. The Amazon priestess told Hippolyta that the pain was the longing for the child she lost in her past life. Athena instructed Hippolyta to sculpt a child from the clay of the island and they gave the statue life as Princess Diana. Hippolyta was a stern yet loving mother. When it came time for Diana to leave home, Hippolyta wept fearing she'd never see her child again. But the gods blessed the queen with fortune and Diana would return and together mother and daughter would open up their home to the outside world allowing the teachings of the Amazons to be heard by man once more. In time she would become the adoptive mother of Donna Troy and discover that a second clay sculpture had been brought to life as her daughter, Nubia. Hippolyta remains weary of man but hopes to make amends with them and bring about true peace once more.Β

I agree. The mythos was changed to be "more male friendly" even though Wonder Woman has millions of male fans beforehand. The Amazons were rebirthed souls according to George Perez and the New Earth canon (1987-2010). The soil and waters of the Aegean were churned to create Hippolyta and then Antiope with the rest following. The Amazons were resurrected souls of feminine humans killed by masculine violence. Later Diana was resurrected (as the unborn child Hippolyta was killed with in her past life). It's a simple origin but has such deep meaning. <3

He really wasn't fit for Diana. Batman is a better fit for his style and ideas. I hope that the Amazon Historia Phil Jimenez is currently drawing is a return to a more traditional Wonder Woman with modern twists. He's the only official Wonder Woman Historian so he knows Diana better than most.Β

Perez and Rucka are also great. Phil gets to go all out on his artwork. He posted some of it on Instagram. It’s one of his best work

I'm so excited for his book! Him, Perez and Rucka are the best modern Wonder Woman writers.

The only thing I question is what happened to the other black label comic. Wonder Woman’s daughter

Knowing DC's poor management and lack of discipline, simply canceled by CEO concerns or they needed a cut and Wonder Woman's one of the first characters they cut from.Β

I once called out a writer on Wonder Woman for stuff he said about Marston and Diana's origin. Sadly DC has a biased and certain people are not allowed to say things while others like Jim Lee could hold a contest for fans to draw Harley Quinn committing suicide four different ways... but a writer on Wonder Woman says something so minor and non-offensive... NO!!!
