I think I've got it sorted: the woman's cyan colouring conflicts too much with the bright orange background. Shifting it towards blue, darkening the bartender's colour to compensate, and putting the "word balloon" somewhere in between looks right to me. I can send a URL via a note, if you want a visual...

i used a typical run of the mill ballpoint pen. like the type you get from hotels and car dealerships. yknow, the free ones! for some reason they work the best. i was gonna use the ink brush, but my hand wasnt steady enough for this one. im working on it haha.
