Description

More light magic with LualaDy from our adventures with fairy lights and shadows.
I've found myself making a lot of black and white edits lately, I'm really liking the atmosphere they create.

So serious. The choice of B&W adds to the tone of the portrait.

Thanks, I've been exploring B&W a lot more these last few days, It's so much more about the tone and contrast, it's a cool way to explore light. I liked how the background is so dark and then the different shades of grey, the way the lights became just white, it emphasises the glow they create.

If you have a processing program that will adjust each color for Saturation, darkness/lightness and Hue, you can really control how the colors transfer over to gray scale. The Canon RAW processing program does this, and Photoshop did when I had that as well. Probably LightRoom does, but I do not know for sure. There was a time for about a year back when I was shooting film I did everything on B&W 3200 speed film. Shooting with an eye towards B&W helped to teach me to consider light and composition, more so than with color.

Yeah, Lightroom is really good at it, I've been using it for a little while now, I'm always careful with the sliders though too much and it starts to look wrong.
I always used to love shooting on Illford HP5, since that's what we used a lot in college.  I haven't shot any film in a long time, it's getting harder and more expensive to get film developed here. Still have an oldish Nikon film camera though that keeps calling to be used.

Yeah, for me the expense and hassle just doesn't make it worth while any longer. I gave my film gear to a young hipster who is 'rediscovering' film photography. I have crates with thousands of film photos though. Lot of family stuff, and just general fun stuff too.
