The Legend of Mesulina

Once upon a Time in the Lands of what is today known as Luxembourg there was a Count named Siegfried. A certain day while he was traveling inside the forests enjoying its splendor, he found a beautiful lake, like a lost paradise amidst the luxurious green surrounding him. He took a second or two to keep that image inside his heart and saw the most divine woman he had ever laid his eyes upon, swimming inside the fresh water of that lake. He instantly fell in love with her and managed to, after some time and investigation to find where she lived, ask her to marry him.

She accepted with one condition: once during every month she would need a day for her only, she wanted to be left alone and that no questions were made. Being so fond of her and her majestic beauty, Siegfried accepted the condition and they were both wedded finding true bliss and love within their marriage.

The time went by and so, every first Wednesday of the month, Mesulina would have the day all to herself staying at her bedroom or leaving in the early morning. Siegfried bared his curiosity until one day when, blinded by the urge to know what his beloved wife was doing, he followed her through the streets into the labyrinth underneath the city and waited until she entered a room which she closed immediately. After waiting some time to calm down his heart, wounded by the treason his mind was casting upon his heart, he reached the door and looked inside. His eyes could not believe what he was seeing, his ears could not accept as true what he was listening to. Inside the room, there was Mesulina bare naked half woman, half fish, singing ancient chants while the candles and the stone walls would vibrate and undulate as sea waves according to each sound her dazzling voice produced.

Being a mermaid, Mesulina also had a sixth sense capable of noticing the slightest change in the environment and so she understood her beloved husband was watching him from the other side. Immediately, when she realized her secret had been revealed, she jumped through the window and vanished in the water of the Alzette River to never be found again. Count Siegfried spent his days looking for her and cursing the day he paid attention to the doubts he had inside his heart.

Sometimes, in the calm waters of the River, it is possible to listen a soft whisper, to see the head of a beautiful woman or a fishtail disturbing the waters as a man passes by for Mesulina, even though she could not stay with Siegfried any longer, she never stopped loving him.
