A little Backstory for Shelya Ika and Maroi Ika, the Squid Girl Inklings wearing masks.

Ever since Ika Musume had come to Inkopolis at a point before the era of Splatoon 2, cases of hybrids of Splatoon's Inklings and Ika Musume's Squid people, called "Squid Girl Inklings", popped up. Shelya Ika and Maroi Ika were only a few of them. One day, the Squid Girl Inklings, including both Shelya and Maroi have been kidnapped by an evil scientific organization, and were spent a few years under their scientific torture. Shelya and Maroi, however, had gone through worse. The evil scientists studying them forcibly put masks on their faces that restricted their speech, while allowing them to breathe through unknown circumstances.

A few years later, the containment chambers that Shelya and Maroi were imprisoned in malfunctioned, opening an escape for them. So both Inklings, still wearing those masks, were on the run from the evil scientists.

At last, they escaped, for a few weeks, they spent time in the open, trying to get their masks off to be free from not being able to speak, but to no avail. That is when Legend and the other X9 popped in.

The Squid Girl Inklings tried to talk, but due to their masks, they only spoke in unintelligible mumbles. When a few of the X9, notably Legend, Paramed, and Treasurer, realized the situation, they agreed to help.

At the X9's base, the X9 helped the two light blue inklings take off the masks, and it worked. They also got rid of the gag bits inside the masks that were making Shelya and Maroi unable to speak. Both inklings informed of the situation they had been through, and due to this, the X9 and their friends were roused to the cause.

In the aftermath, the imprisoned Squid Girl Inklings were liberated, and the evil organization responsible for the imprisonment of the inklings was shut down for good. Shelya and Maroi thanked the X9 and their friends, but strangely, they decided to keep the masks instead of toss them away, since the X9 had removed the gag bits in the masks. The X9 agreed, but decided to make some technological modifications to the masks, making the masks into life respirators for Shelya and Maroi. Both inklings were happy to have the X9 on their side, and humorously, now liked the modified masks and both Squid Girl inklings are willing to serve the X9, unlike how Ika Musume forced to work as a waitress...
