Description The creature was called a Ye-Ti, meaning horse-bear. It had the furry, large body of the bear but a long mane of hair running down its back. Although slow, this was the favorite method of travel because the long bushy tail, as bit as a human is tall, waves behind the Ye-Ti, wiping away his footprints in the snow of his mountain home.
As the years went by, the Southerners hunted the Ye-Ti to extinction, leaving the minds of the villagers to recreate the creatures for their children. From generation to generation, the Ye-Ti became more humanoid in the minds of the children. They remembered not how the creature pulled sleighs and carried people as kind as any pony. They remembered the way the Ye-Ti stood on his back legs and roared at the hunters who shot them for their teeth, their tails, their fur. The generations handed down the great tusks and claws until they were artifacts of the horrible beasty that used to frequent the mountains. And the gentle giant, the Ye-Ti, became the humanoid monster, the Yeti.

My scanner killed it, but here's a picture I drew of a creature I made up. It's my first attempt at prismacolor pencils, so pardon how ugly it looks. As always, advanced critique is appreciated!
