Only in western/european civilizations are bats considered bad. In asian, persian, and south american mythos/lore, bats are a good sign- they keep disease carrying insect populations down, or find all the good fruit in a forest.
And as an aside, bats are really clean animals. Colonies of bats will 'evict' individuals that are sick. They actually will isolate rabies carriers and make sure none of the rest of the colony will get infected. They're smart, awesome little critters. BUT they're also much more sensitive to stuff like insecticides or poisons since they eat lots of insects and are down at the lower end of the food chain, so they can die off a lot more easily.
