These actually look more realistic to me than the CGI versions we saw in TLJ, in my opinion.Β  I'm not joking.Β  Practical effects FTW!

The ones in the beginning popping up in the grass and pecking around for seeds actually were animatronic puppets and looked like something you would see in the original films, plus almost like little pygmy owls or a real bird. The over-exaggerated CGI ones from the sad-yet-funny-yet-cute BBQ scene onward I agree are a little less believable. Had they put some effort into it and got the right talent, they could have done imagineering the whole movie if they wanted to. They are run by Disney now instead of Fox, after all.

CGI in general rarely ever looks believable/realistic to me, though the tech is certainly improving.Β  (Surprisingly, Snoke was one of the best instances of CGI in TLJ.)

Snoke was just fine and in fact excellent CGI since it was done over an actual actor. Had they just kept to the puppets with the porgs and gotten very talented puppeteer artists to give them more expressive faces and work on their movement and/or work the camera around their movement (make them move more like penguins), then you would have more believable critters. Same had they applied CGI to actual trained foxes in order to create the Crait foxes to make them work a little better. If they could go to the trouble for bringing back original Yoda, they could do the same for keeping the porgs practical the whole way through the film and put more effort into their faces via Disney's imagineering team. The farriers I don't know what they could have done, except maybe have filmed llamas from the neck-down and used camera-work to carefully integrate shots of a practical, animatronic head with well-done CGI to splice the work and make it look real. Those were my main SFX/visual effects gripes. My main plot gripe was making Admiral Holdo a complete douche to the protagonists and then all of a sudden we have to feel sorry for her during the sacrifice scene, ripped straight from "The Doomsday Machine" episode of "Star Trek: The Original Series". It wasn't because of anything about politics or dumb stuff you hear people normally complain about, but for me a legit complaint about her being a minor antagonist right up until this point, with nothing to give us any sympathy. Why couldn't have been someone we knew and cared about? Say, they brought back Mon Mothma from "Return of the Jedi" who had the exact same role and played by the same actress as an older lady who is portrayed just as sympathetically as Princess Leia, and tries to help them while someone else tries to stop them (say Admiral Ackbar, portrayed as misguided at first, but comes around and gets more sympathetic before dying with more dignity than he gets in the film) before getting a much more deserved version of the sacrificial scene. Those were my only real gripes with the movie.Β

These'll roast up a treat! Hey Chewbacca! Dinner time!

Seriously, they look like a mix of guinea pigs and puffins minus the beak.
