Tenth (!!) in my "Women of Japanese Horror" series. Holy crap, have I actually done 10 paintings already? Considering that I have the attention span of a gnat when it comes to doing comic pagesm, that's pretty incredible. No, really, it is.This one's of Otsuyu, the tragic "heroine" of the Rakugo (one-man storytelling) story "Botan Dourou", or "The Peony Lantern". I really adore that story due to Otsuyu's motive for coming back: she returned out of love, not out of hatred or vengeance. You can read the whole story at this URL: www.kabuki21.com/botan_doro.ph…
This painting, despite not being as comlicated as the others, still took me a long time due to personal things happening lately. I wish the white gel pen worked out a bit better, and I don't think I did a good job making the lantern look illuminated enough. If the painting's contrast looks odd, it's because I got a new computer with an LCD monitor, so I can't see the colors the same as with my old comp.
I used up half a tube of white watercolor to make the flowers/leaves. Egads!

i love this picture
i remember reading on wikipedia that botan doro is a cautionary tale about falling in love with the dead. there's a rather gruesome mention of the man otsuyu falls in love with(as a ghost) humping a skeleton.

I love the tones in this beautiful watercolor...lovely flow and lines, and the mood/expressiveness is fantastic...I like the power in this wonderful work.

Hmm... it looks good, but Otsuyu looks more creepy than I imagine her to be.. maybe because of the white spaces in her eyes? The details make the picture interesting, without the blues blending in eachother, but the lantern and the kotodama fade more in to the backgound than they should...

Out of all the horror piece, i really love the colour and way you painted the clothing in this one piece. Really cold but soft, gorgeous. This does not look scary at all(NO OFFENSE) Its just too beautiful to be scary... or maybe... it can...

I also adore the fact that many of your works are David Mack influenced XD the man is a king.

I think a reason the lantern maybe didn't come out is the highlight colour being
too cool of a shade to come foreward through that much blue. I dunno, maybe a
washed-out brighter yellowish tone or somethin to bring it out more, ya know what I mean?
