Description A friend of mine was doing a tribute piece to a friend of his that died in car accident, and asked me if I would take a self portrait of myself looking 'distressed'. I agreed, I setup my camera and shot off about 20 pics.

8months later I'm feeling much like I look in the photo, and decided I should post it.

Taken with Kodak DC210, cropping, tinting and some focus correction in photoshop.

Great contrast and hue. Good focus correction, the sofa and curtain is soft while you are looking sharp. Nice photo.

The blue cast works very well to connote sadness and grief - complemented by the wonderfuly soft (tender) windowlight and narrow depth of field. Given the narrow depth of field you've done well to know exactly where to position yourself.

l like the soft tone, nice portrait. I wish you didn't have to feel that way to post it, but that's life, 2/4 of distress, 1/4 of compatibility (neutral) and 1/4 of happiness...

That is an awesome shot. The way you come alive in the photo while everything else seems to fade into itself, you can almost feel the emotion.

Adding this to my favorites.

This is awesome. The lighting is fantastic, but it does add a bit too much light to something that to me, should feel a bit darker. But regardless, the lighting IS amazing You're pretty damn good with a simple digital camera and can get some great effects.

The pose is good me thinks, especially because I usually sit like that when I'm angry or depressed or something. The fact that you can't see you're face really adds a lot to it as well.

Regardless, this is a wonderful photo. I love the lighting/shadows and the colours, its just fabulous. Very evocative too. Definantly a favourite.

What exactly do you mean by focus correction? Any correction made to the focus isn't exactly good if it is done digitally in my book. If it was to the chair it looks blurry because of photoshop blur not camera depth of field blur.

However, all things aside, I think it's important that you stress what the photo was about and the idea. Therefore link to the details page.

The photo:
I love the pose, I really do. I like how I cannot see your face. I think that though the cropping could be more on you. I think if you were a bit closer taking up more of the frame the white behind you would not be so distracting.
The softness works as well as the seemingly blue tone.

I'd say that I know this is a pretty strong image, but it could use a little bit of work in general.

Portraits aren't easy at all, this much I know.
You can either do them or you cannot. You I think are going to be able to do them.

Now that I actually went to the "vew details" and read the description it changed it a lot. I thought it was an artistic self portrait which it turned out NOT to be. So forget all I said above.

Okay. First of, the idea and quality are amazing. EVerything I will be saying afterwards, I will be saying BECAUSE I love you and I know you can and will do better, if you consider my comments worth noting.
I like the soft atmosphere. The low contrast, the whites of the background.
The pose sucks. And so do the clothes. If you idea was the suffering "good", then you should have wore all white, or all grey, or... okay, those black socks are the end of me. What is the pose supposed to suggest? Is it tention? is it desperation? saddness? depression? You look all crooked up, the legs position is something confusing, the leg is cut of and we can't see you "touch the ground". Your left hand seems to be flying in the air. How comfortable is it, to rest the head on the hand that is not resting on anything? I like the fists idea though, that looks nice. oh, another thing. The black shadows. I know just too well how had it is to get rid of thsoe when the picture is done in front of the window, but even a small light source, or, even better, a kind of a reflector would help, would bring out thedetail in hair and clothes on the right side.
And take of those socks.
there.
and I still love you.
It's an amazingly strong picture, I wish I was not in the bitching mood tonight, I think I would even add it to my favourites.
Contradicting myself? well, what did you expect from a Hesitation?
