Description {Contest Entry Number 1}

Finally I've finished...

This is my for my first contest that I've decided to enter, for and I honestly hope that she really likes it :c

I've been working on this for like a week

But! I would like to say that I am very happy with the outcome. To be honest this is better than how I pictured the final product Again, I hope she likes it, and I hope each one of you that views it likes it too <3 Also please give me feedback and what you all think. (For example in the windows is supposed to be bushes OTL) I might keep changing how I color until someone tells me to stop and it looks good xD

Anyway, this is her character Mayrin Raizu, which is her OC from D. Gray-Man with Tyki Mikk. When I read in her bio that she is super childish and loves chocolate mud cake I  couldn't think of any other way to draw her than trying to feed Tkyi the cake xD Sadly I've never watched D. Gray-Man but I hope that I did a good job portraying the two.
Thank you for viewing this picture if you do, I really appreciate it, and I had so much fun challenging myself again with this picture. It was great

I also want to say that I found the pattern for the chair on Google, just to cover all the grounds haha

These two are adorable! I haven't watched D. Gray-Man either, but the expressions are really well done ^^ If you don't mind some critique, I suggest you try varying the saturation with different colors and light or shadow. It'd help with smoothing out the scene. Also, by including more cast (hard) shadows, the light source becomes more evident, and things won't have the gradient effect.

I still can't get over how adorable these two are D:

Thank you so much for commenting ;w;
I'm always open to critique so you're really helping me a lot c: Honestly the shading was so difficult for me to do with this. I really didn't know how exactly to approach it. If I did it one way, they looked way too dark, but the same with the lighting, they would look to bright. I also never really know when to blend in the shadows or to keep them as hard lines. If I blend it it doesn't look right, but if I keep it solid it doesn't look right to me either. If I were to make more hard shadowing.. would their shadows be on the table or more on the wall? I wasn't sure since I made the two windows the light sources... It's so confusing Dx

But seriously thank you for commenting. You're a great help to me <3

No problem! I suggest you practice cel-shading, the technique where you don't blend at all. Over-blending is a really nasty habit that gets on everyone, so restricting yourself to just hard lines for practice a few times could help (it did for me at least ).

Since the two windows are behind them (let's forget that both are slightly to the left/right), the lighting would be backlighting, and their shadows would be on the table. I personally find backlighting to be extremely hard to comprehend, but from what I can tell, everything would be in shadows expect for the edges.
If there was another lightsource directly hitting them from the "camera", in which case I misinterpreted the setting, there would be no shadows. Talk shows are often examples of well-lit environments, and they can be used as reference for where the rare shadows are. (mostly under the neck, under the arms, etc.)

Okay, I'll try the cel-shading next time (So like what I tried with my llama picture right?)

And yeah I wanted to make the backlight effect like you described, but I felt like it was looking too dark so I decided to lighten it up a lot... but thanks for the advice. I never thought the shading would be on the table. I just thought they would merge into one giant shadow so that's what I tried to do

Yup, that's cel-shading! (I recommend going for more shades though)

It's complicated, I guess xD If you look at real-life lighting, you'd see that there'd be multiple shadows from the multiple sources, each a different shade due to exposure from the other sources. Just remember to be really specific as to where the virtual locations of those sources are, and work from there. To be honest, I'm still rather confused myself as to where your light is coming from. It's up to you as the artist to show us

Okay, I'll definitely try it out on my next piece then and if you don't mind looking at it again? You don't have to fave it or watch me for it, I could send you the link in a note, but you've just been so helpful I just want to make sure I do it right. Honestly your feedback has been so helpful. I'm going to go watch some speedpaintings now on YouTube.

Seriously. You are amazing. Thank you for all the help <3 If I could give you more llamas I would, but I hope that my words are enough to show you how much I appreciate it ;w;
