It wasn't until lunch that Nick got a chance to talk to Kirri.
"Kirri... wait."
"What is it?" she snapped.
He sidestepped and moved in front of her.
"Ohmygod Nick?"
Nick didn't have anything to say, so he just nodded.
"It's sooo good to see you! I just can't believe it!"
"Me neither! Why didn't you write?"
"I did! Why didn't you!"
She smacked her forehead.
"I can't believe it! I've been such an idiot!"
"What?"
"I'll tell you in a minute. Why don't we sit down, I reckon it'll be a bit of a long story."
"Mkay."

Five minutes later, the two were sitting on the bench overlooking the school field.
"Chocolate?" Kirri pulled a mega-sized bar out of her bag.
"Is that even a question?! Of course!"
She broke a big chunk off the top and handed it too him.
"Here you then! Anyway, I think my Gran might'a realized we were writing to eachother and stopped the post. Geez, she's such a control freak."
"So you're still living with her?"
"Unfortunatly, yes."
"How did you end up living up here again, anyway?"
"Bit of a long story. So, we moved down to Rotorua, right? I froze every night, it was freezing! I'd forgotten how warm it could be up here!"
Nick eyed her cautiously.
"You're telling me. But aren't you cold?" Kirri was wearing only a singlet and a pair of jeans.
"Cold? The height of summer isn't this warm! I love the sunshine!"
"Well... anyway, carry on."
"Anyway, even though it was really cold, it was pretty. We lived by a lake and everything. But it was annoying, I had to walk to school everyday, and then I always got lost getting to class. But, more to the point, a month or so ago, Dad got fired, and he went out. He never came back. The house was really expensive, so we moved back up here first chance. Anyway, what about you? Didn't your Mum run a bakery or something?"
"Yeah, she still is. It's really popular now. Lots of choclate." Nick grinned happily.
"You really loved chocolate, don't you?" asked Kirri. Nick just grinned.
"Yeah, so anyway, lots of chocolate, lots of baking, treats, and all that. Sometimes I have to help out in the holidays."
"Really?"
"Yeah. It's kinda boring though. D'ya wanna swing by after school?"
Suddenly, something behind Kirri caught Nick's attention.
"Josh!" he yelled out. The boy didn't take any notice.
"JOSH! Come over here!" Josh hurried over.
"Josh, this is Kirri." Kirri waved. "This is my friend Josh."
Kirri broke off a piece of chocolate and held it out to him.
"Would you like some?"
"Nah, it's 'kay."
Nick turned back to Kirri.
"Anyway, you coming round?"
"Yeah, guess so. It'll be nice to see some familiar sights."
"Err, what's all this about?" Josh asked.
"Sorry, Josh. Kirri used to live up here, years and years ago. We knew eachother then, we're just catching up. Anyway, you gunna come too?"
"Yeah, sure."
"Then follow me after school, kay?"
The other two agreed.

When the bell rang at three that day, the trio set off down towards the church.
"So, where'd you say you moved from again?"
"Rotorua. Pretty, but cold."
"Ahh, I've been there. I know what you mean."
"Mmm." She sucked on a length of chocolate thoughtfully.
"What's the homework system like?"
"No homework, just practising for maths tests, and what you didn't finish in class."
"Ahh kay. It's just cuz my gran gets really paranoid about schoolwork and stuff. Personally, I think she's crazy."
"We're here."
They turned to a small corner-shop type bakery swarming with customers. Nick led them behind the counter, where the owner, Rachel Henning, was serving a customer. She dusted her hands on her apron and turned to face her son.
"Yes?"
"Mum, these are my friends, Kirri and Josh."
"Kirri... what an unusual name. I swear I heard it before somewhere, though."
"Probably... I used to live up here years and years ago."
"Oh! I remeber you now! Nice to meet you again then, Kirri!"
