Description
Fullbody + Additional Composition commission forCharacter is Aerie from Baldur's Gate 2~!
This is the most complex illustration I've done to date. It was honestly a huge challenge, but I enjoyed every moment of it <3
I love doing art with actual stories/meaning behind them!
Description from commissioner:
"She lived among the Avariel, the winged elves, and was captured by slavers when she was still very young. Supposedly extinct since the First Flowering eons ago she was purchased as a display for the circus. The spectators were cruel with curiosity, jeering and poking at the spectacle of a winged elf and the circus didn't care as long as she drew crowds. Alone, caged, and paraded around in strange lands she longed for home, for the comfort of friends & family, for the rich aroma of stew, and the soft embrace of warm sheets.
Held in a cage too small her wings eventually became withered and infected despite her begs and pleas. Much to the circus handlers' regret they dragged her screaming out of her cage and cauterized her wings to keep her alive. Without her wings she no longer drew crowds and her handlers pondered what to do with her…Even the mines wouldn't take a sickly slave, maybe an alchemist? It didn't matter for her though, she couldn't imagine a flightless life among her kind. Good things can't happen for people that want for naught."

She looks so sad, I would hug her if I could ;^; her story is even more... I can't find words right now.
Stupidity of those people is shocking. I'll say nothing about slavery, that is just already cruel enough. But why didn't they care about someone who is making lots of money for them? I try so hard to find logic here, but I simply can't.
Background is stunning, I really admire the whole concept.

The circus didn't care as long as they are making money. They abandoned her cause she can no longer fulfill the purpose of being an attraction.

Well in the original cannon they simply didn't know her race was thought to have been extinct. They thought that she was being a typical whiny slave, slaves don't invoke trust in their masters.

I see your point, but still, if they only cared about making money out of showing her to the crowds of people, why didn't they took care about her health so they could earn more, and more? Not in a sake of her life, but in a sake of the effect they wanted to achieve. While making business out of something as cruel as slavery, shouldn't they at least take care about what is needed to help them continue what they are doing?
I don't know much about it, so yup, it's just my mere opinion, but I simply can't understand that^^"

Yeah, I kinda have! lol no, I didn't forget about you, just that it was really difficult to handle all the comments and events I had online and lots of friends had streams to, I neglected some of them for months XD I'm on a mission to empty my inbox right now. Btw we just had a group chat on skype yesterday and it was pretty relaxing and fun, too bad the duck couldn't join us but I'm not sure it was in the time range you weren't sleeping or had free time. (Next time I'll call you)

I originally gave a vague request for the background hoping it would add to a feeling of "neglect and silent suffering" and I have to say that I'm quite please with how it turned out. The dark background with the busy tent gave off the feeling one gets from a Christmas special with hungry orphans outside the window of a warm bakery. Quite satisfied.

I really like the analogy of comparing this to orphans outside a bakery. It was exactly how I decided to approach the idea of neglect and isolation. Furthermore, I also wanted to convey the concept as a dark "backstage"/behind the scenes of a circus c:
