Description
Needed to do something different today, so no texture but an artwork featuring my own materials. All my own resources except for a font I used to create those little dotted flag details.Anyone else horrible at naming their own artworks?

Some seem to be in a ruffle about me using this, is this OK for me to use?

It's really cool seeing these kinds of collages. You make some neat compositions!

Thank you so much! Not enough time to reaaally get into it, though.

I suggest just making a huge list of prospective titles
It worked for me anyhow.

Thank you Some random reddit dude was ranting on about how this was the lowest form of art, because a digital collage isn't as much effort as, say, a painting which you maybe spend several hours or weeks on. I'm glad there's many people who disagree
To me, it's just a way to express myself, a way I feel comfortable with. I wouldn't feel comfortable if I needed very much time to quickly translate a feeling into a form of art. And I don't think you can measure how arty something is just by how long it took to make.

thepurplemonster In reply to mercurycode [2015-02-14 01:05:00 +0000 UTC]
Oh, fuck them. That's so ridiculous. Who can say how much effort was spent but the artist? And if I spent a week stacking paperclips, would that be art just because I spent time on it? I find people like that ridiculous -- if you have so much time and opinion on your hands, why not spend it making the art that you think is better, instead of putting down other people's effort? Sorry for the rant, it really annoys me when people are unnecessarily negative.
I think your textures are very emotionally powerful, and visually beautiful; it's clear you put a lot of love and effort into them. If that doesn't make something art, what does?
You keep doing you.

Thank you, although I might have needed more of a theme for this. I'll definitely try and play around more with digital collages

Unfortunately, unlike I do with textures, I didn't save any steps of progress of this work :/ BUT basically all I did was layering things on top of one another, playing around with the capacity of the layers and stuff. Just basic layering and working the eraser tool, no fancy methods whatsoever

Nice - great way to promote your textures too, showing examples of how to use them
Some artworks name themselves more readily than others.Β Some titles are catchy, some are cheesy, some are obvious, and some you can't put the title you came up with because it reveals too much of you.Β Titles are a really interesting part of the artistic process, kinda a statement about how we pronounce something into the world.

Thanks, Joe Β
Yes, I agree. That might be the reason why I don't actually want to name my artworks at all - I feel most comfortable with just numbers. Also sometimes I feel like titles might go too far in the sense of steering one's interpretation in a direction rightaway. I prefer it if people can freely look at something and let their imagination take them away, wherever they want to go.

Yeah, not naming them would probably get more comments back about what other people see in a piece, which is interesting.

I think you should lay of that "Jeff" for a while. Still I like it, but I feel that it's more of a 'Jacob'.

Now that you say it, it definitely resembles a Jacob more Next time.

That could be the answer to our problems! And Senecal is the one to thank!Β He doesn't know it yet, but he'll be worshipped like a rockstar amongst artists ever suffering under the unbearable task of naming their works.
Thanks, happy you like it Sometimes you just gotta break out from your usual routine.

Oh, I am totally naming my next piece Bob (or something) and dedicating it to him!!!
I hear ya! When cutting stock gets to be to much, I'll play with a manip! When the creativity runs dry, I go back to cutting! Kinda nice to be a stock provider for that reason!

mercurycode In reply to Mom-EsPeace [2015-02-11 17:38:38 +0000 UTC]
Hahaha Bob That's a superb choice of name. Β
Yeah, that's true. On the one hand, I can let my creative spirits flow when making textures, on the other hand I can never really "break out" because it still has to be usable in some way.

Usually, I name it "Jeff". Most times, that doesn't go over well.
