Do you usually set the value first before coloring it?

Yes. Please check out my process/tutorial folder in my gallery to know more. ^ ^

Great picture, though I am curious as to why you flipped it.

Its normally done artist when projects take long amounts of time. When staring at a picture for long periods of time, your mind started to project details that are not there or your mind starts to think of the picture being complete due to the fact you have been looking at it for so long.
Flipping it helps prevent that most of the time.

So do you really start in black and white? Is the color just an overly?

awwwhhh I think it was much better in B&W! At 3th etap : ' OO
it doesn't mean that finished work is bad, I like it too, but at this 3 etap lightwork looks great while at finished you have big black-blue dot at bottom and almost flat half of canvas.

Thank you, I appreciate your opinion ~ I totally see what you mean. ^ ^ The dark background had more depth.
However it didn't feel like finished work for me, so I had to keep going.
I don't understand what you meant by "big black-blue dot" however.

Oh I'm glad! I was afraid to critique great and more skilled artist like you >///<'
and sure it wasn't finished! But it will be great to keep this effect, even with details.. :'O

take a look! I think this dark area (ok, I was an idiot to use "dot" ;'DD ) is really heavy and it's placed at the very bottom of your canvas while the rest is almost at the same tone with a spots of flash light. It makes your composition scattered.
I think that is why I like the earlier versions, they are more balanced in composition sense !

It's alright. I like listening to what other people think.
I completely understand what you mean.
The problem lies where I overdid the lighting, most likely. I thought it would make more sense considering the light that was coming from above her magic spell and the scattering of her snowy magic material.
The truth is I see a lot of mistakes on this work not just those areas lol. I thank you for pointing some of those, I appreciate it.

Hi! Lovely piece my dear. One question though. Do you paint in grey scale first then paint over it with colors? I've always wanted to try out this technique when I practice but never knew how to do it exactly.

Hello~ Thank you tons !
Not always, but recently I've only started to work on BnW first, because I really want to improve my knowledge on values. ^^ But mostly with my old works, I go straight to colors. I still do it if I feel like it.
You can check out my notes here to know more of how I color:
Also I've given some other points on the comments.
You can also check my folder for processes here for more: zwxart.deviantart.com/gallery/…
Hope it helps~ Have fun and learn a lot !

Why didn't you keep the original diagonal - it would have been the logical thing to do. Any special reason for flipping the picture at the end?

The original sketch was really that way because Elsa's hair is designed to be on her left shoulder (As I've often noticed). It's just when I was saving them, I had them flipped. ^ ^ I always and often flip my canvas to see the errors.

I get it from the point of view of searching for errors and visual tweaking, but you had such a strongly indicated primary diagonal (which is always bottom left corner towards upper right corner - the way we 'read' pictures), that I was really surprised to see it flipped in the end. I just think it's a shame beacuse the original had a stronger sense of energy and power in my opinion However, it is still an exquisite piece of digital art - congratulations on a DD

I did not know about that. Perhaps you're right. To me it doesn't really matter whether it was right or left flipped.
But I will definitely make more research on that.
And thanks a lot !

Could you explain to me why you would draw the whole thing in black and white first and then color it? It seems like a lot of work, like drawing the piece twice. Thank you.

merillizaART In reply to xbluephantomx [2014-04-08 04:43:47 +0000 UTC]
Hello.. No not really. Trying to learn the basic fundamental: Values, which is knowing and controlling how to paint the dark and white areas of the artwork. It is also great to do it when the art has many details and I did not want to worry about the colors first and just trying to think and paint what needs to be painted.
