Description
The lighthouse of the Maples is a rare sightseeing gem often ignored by mainstream tourists. Apart from its breathtaking colours at sunset and sunrise it is the perfect spot for couples to share a special moment. It's the only tower in the area with triple colour flags. They don't have maritime significance but the locals say they were there from the time when the lighthouse keeper's wife and daughter were still around and the Maples were still a whole family

Very interesting discussion between you and user2525200. Me too, I think that adding a description box and making the girl tell something is a good idea (I don't think of writing a long-length story and inserting your drawings as illustrations of the story). If, for further images, you could introduce another character speaking with your girl, it would be nice as well, though more a big work on you. Also, perhaps you could give a name to your girl ? What I try to do with my 'Peggy' series is that each picture tells a little story.
Cheers,
Maurice

hi there. Yes. telling stories is pretty cool. There's several ways. Up till now I've opted for discrete descriptions. My personal preference right now is to keep the comments at a plane that is related to the subject of my paintings but not directly connected, I feel like I don't want to insist on the obvious.
Conversations need bubbles, I'm not a big fan of bubbles unless the piece I'm working in is meant to be part of an illustrated story. I'm picky about composition and lighting you see... and a bubble in there would be difficult.
So yeah, you obviously have a tone of experience in this area so when I do decide to go for short stories which require speech bubbles I'll check your work to refresh =]

This is actually a very intriguing image. At first glance it appears to be a shot of the outside of the girls right leg but upon looking at the foot it's becomes evident that it's the inside of her left, with absolutely nothing beside it where one would expect something to be. Beautiful illustration of the "empty space". I expect she's enjoying her view from the top of the lighthouse as well.

Oh yeah. She is enjoying the view. In fact... she is being photographed by someone who's got a Fish eye lense. It's a tiny space up there but this is what a fish eye is for.
Obviously I didn't apply the magnifying effect on herself, just the environment around her. =]

Yes, actually now that you mention it i'm familiar with the fish eye lenses and this is exactly the effect. Again, amazing depth of field as well which would seem impossible in a painting but your accomplishing it consistently

I think I'm starting to create stories around these pieces. Please check the descriptions of the lighthouse and bandage time and let me know what u think. Thanks!

I think this sounds like a great idea, bit of a story behind the images. LOL definitely something you'll do much better than i would. As an old German engineer, i even have trouble with naming things let alone coming up with stories, have always just given everything model and file numbers that made enough sense to keep things organized. My wife made me name the models of one of our product lines for her marketing purposes and i think i spent more time puzzling over that than i did over the engineering of the products themselves LOL

Yeah. I want to create descriptions that could evoke complex feelings or emotions. The bandage time description is a good example of what I want. It speaks something through metaphors.
As for the other lighthouse description I want to intentionally create plot elements and let the audience figure out for themselves
I didn't know you were German. Since when did you move to the US?

Yeah, this will be an interesting addition to the already magnificent art work. Ya ich bin ein Deutsche, been in the US since 1999, bought a nice chunk of land land and built the new place in AZ here in 2005

Wow. So do you ever visit Germany? I moved from China to Spain in 1995, quite close.

Hehehehe, well this is where it gets strange. I've never been to Germany. My family were immigrant farmers who settled in Canada along with a bunch of other Germans back in the 1800's. The whole area was German so the people kept the culture and the language and we grew up speaking Platt Deutsch so i'm very fluent in that aber meine Hoch Deutsch ist ein bisscher scheisslich.

LOL, okay, this is where it gets complicated, there are probably into the hundreds of Platt (low) Germans, it seems that every little village had its own language way back when. Then Hoch (high) German was standardized (centuries ago) as a common language so they could all speak to each other, but everyone kept speaking their own Platt Deutsch at home, i was raised on one of them. You'll also find this interesting, i gather from your last that your originally from China. I have a friend who's wife is Chinese as well and she and my wife have arranged a party for this weekend to celebrate the Chinese New Year

Hi there. yes. I am indeed Chinese ethnically speaking. Happy Snake year! Although being abroad the Chinese new year spirit isn't has high.
A party to celebrate is definitely the way to go. I wish we could officially celebrate all festivities from all countries. Then we wouldn't have to work that many days a year haha
So even now in Germany these Platt german variants still exist?

user25252000 In reply to merlinm [2013-02-09 18:00:02 +0000 UTC]
Oh yes, they are all still being spoken. I've actually ran into two people since i've been in the U.S. who speak my Platt. One is a friend from Pennsylvania who grew up in an area similar to my own and the other a friend who immigrated from Germany many years ago, which surprised me as here the odds of running into someone here who speaks the same Platt are pretty slim. Also many of the other standardized European languages began as Platt German as well. A version was also spoken by the Saxons who originally populated England and the name of that country is Platt German as well as it means "end land" LOL.
Hehehehe, it's the Mexicans who have put your festivities idea into practice, where we have one celebration for a particular thing they generally have created 10 or 20. It's an interesting culture and one that i've come to appreciate very much. Wish you could come to our Party tomorrow as well, it should be fun.

The etymology of the word England has always been a mystery to me. Thanks very much for clarifying that one! And it makes sense as well as you probably don't wanna go further north just by looking at the kinds of gloomy weather you get in that area.
Yes. The Mexican tradition should be quite mixed. Having to venerate both the god/sants of the old world and the ones from the new world should be a rather demanding job which obviously requires longer periods of rest.
I'd very much like to, but unfortunately I'll be in a coach on my way to Rio de Janeiro tonight. So not much fun for me, but tomorrow I'll be climbing and doing all sorts of tourism stuff. Looking forward to that.

Thanks again for commenting as always you have good things to say. I think you're right. This is indeed the effect I was trying to create: a trick of visuals. This is also helped by the "Fish eye" effect of the painting.
I can say that in terms of background detail, composition and lighting, this piece is by far the most complex and accomplished piece I've done here so far. From afar it has a photographic quality to it.
Thanks again
