Description
Shellpaw placed her feet apart as slowly as she could. Her head was spinning from waking up this early, and she forced back yet another yawn as she trod behind her mentor.
Lichenwater stopping made her crash into him. One of her legs buckled and she yelped as she crashed to the stone floor. Even without seeing them, Shellpaw could feel the burning indignation coming from her mentor’s eyes.
“Get yourself together.” He snapped, grabbing her scruff like a kit and hauling her forward. He didn’t even bother to pick her up, just dragged her to a rock and dumped her like a piece of prey. She scrambled to her feet before he could say more.
“What are we doing?” She growled, “It’s hours until dawn.”
“You need to get acquainted with the territory.”
“Excuse me?” Shellpaw almost laughed, but stopped when Lichenwater’s eyes narrowed, “I’ve lived here my whole life. I think I know my territory pretty well.”
“In the day, you do.” Lichenwater hissed, “But tell me, do you know the path down to the stepping stones from here?”
Shellpaw rolled her eyes, then turned and started walking down the path. “Oh, wow, look at me, I’m walking down a bank at night. Hooray.”
She felt Lichenwater’s paw shove her haunch hard, and her front paw skidded, a sharp pain soaring through her as she lost her balance and tumbled down the bank. With a shriek, she crashed into the water.
She flailed for a few moments in blind panic, before her feet found the soaked pebbles and she shoved herself out of the water, coughing
“What are you doing!?” Lichenwater snarled, tail fluffed up and lashing. “You’re going to wake up the entire clan with your foolishness!” He leapt down the bank and glared at her from the shore of the pool.
Soaked, Shellpaw slowly turned her eyes to him. “You tried to kill me for my foolishness? You’re the one that shoved me!”
Lichenwater straightened his shoulders. “That’s what you get for your disrespect!”
Shellpaw leapt forward, unsheathing her claws as she tried to tackle Lichenwater. He grabbed her face and slammed her onto the rocks easily, mud smearing into her fur.
“Help the healer in their den today. All day. If I see you out of their den once, I will give you so many duties you’ll never become a warrior.”
Shellpaw swallowed and gasped, but Lichenwater removed his paw and leapt up the bank to the High den.
Shellpaw cursed, digging her claws into the bank. The night was still cool, but she staggered to her feet and slipped into the healer den.
