There is a method to my madness, I assure you.

For Twilight, I wanted something smart; Sniper may need to know his stuff, but Medic's genius actually borderlines on the magical.  The mad scientist thing, the ubercharges, all that stuff fits Twilight like a glove.

Fluttershy is an extreme introvert, and I don't think she could handle the stress that comes with being Medic; Sniper however? Keeps away from fighting and tries to help allies from a safe distance (also, if you want to argue the kindness thing, as long as she can get a kill-assist, she's involved with the deaths of whoever her patient kills - and the Medic can kill personally too, even if it's more of a defensive measure).

Zecora'd make a better Medic than Demoman.  If Mane 6 didn't take priority, she'da had it (seriously, demo works with chemicals, Zecora works with herbs).

I'll never understand Spike-Soldier.

I needed more than an accent to justify AJ's class; especially when the Engi can't fight anything stronger than a Medic one-on-one and expect to survive.

Maybe because of the YouTube video the elements of insanity where twilight is actually the sniper, and maybe sniper is the main leader (based on opinions) so they choose twilight .

The Sniper is far from leader material - he's an isolationist who prefers to keep to himself.  The Medic, Engineer and Spy seem to be the brains of the TF2 world.  If you count End of the Line, Soldier may be too, but its canonicity is unknown.  Bearing that in mind, in End of the Line Sniper's job seems to mostly be lookout.

(Forgive me, it's kinda lengthy)

I made my setups because the popular one is very pick-and-choose - what is a deciding factor for one pony might be ignored for another, and major points of ponies' characters become subverted for trivial reasons.  When I made my setup, I wanted to make things that fit the ponies' personalities in the grandest way.

Twilight is good at math, but so much more; she's a scholar, a magician, a leader, and a princess of friendship.  For her, a class that was intelligent beyond their specialization seemed ideal; the Medic seemed to fit that best, and fits her well due to his leader tactics (a Medic's mere presence can decide pushes and retreats) and the fact the Medic is heavily a thinking class (you have to observe the battle field, choose when to use ubercharges, pick who to heal and who can survive without you, etc).

Pinkie Pyro is not unfitting, but limited.  For Pinkie, I wanted to best approximate her; she has lots of gadgets, hides toys around town, and loves to throw parties - Engineer basically fits two out of three of those, and even then one might argue a Sentry Nest could fit the ideal of a party (dispenser dispensing cupcakes and ammo makes me smile).  Pinkie seemed most likely to actually use toys in fights.

Fluttershy is a shy pony, extreme introvert, coward, and not very good at dealing with stress; for her, I wanted a class that stayed away from the actual conflict, whose entire purpose was to remain hidden, and relatively low-stress - this brought us to Engi and Sniper, and Sniper seemed to fit better due to his being the closest thing to a nature lover in the mercs (it's implied he is extremely wealthy and lives in a van by choice).

I needed more than an accent to justify Applejack's class match, and Engi can't fight anything stronger than a Medic one-on-one and expect to live.  For AJ, I wanted a class that was strong, but versatile; who could go on offense or defense at his discression, but also take a hit if he's facing a strong enemy.  Demo is one of the stronger characters in the game, so it just fit (plus, his favorite drink is Scrumpy, a sort of hard apple cider) (plus, I couldn't get over the idea of Twilight calling Applejack 'booksmarts' and 'egghead').

I didn't include Berry because Mane Six take priority, and even then there's a lot of secondary characters I felt deserved notice - Berry (especially the fan concept of her) is heavily more of a background idea.

I also considered lots of other things; misc. items, medieval mode nicknames, MvM setup and importance, etc.  In the end, I wanted my setup to be viable in all grounds, rather than just a passing glance; the popular setup just seemed to me like it was made on a passing-glance of the classes, like the person who made it only wanted to make the smallest of sense.
