I think fans have a tendancy to overexaggerate Celestia's and Luna's powers.Β They're certainly strong, but there's a limit; enough of one that they relied a lot on the Elements of Harmony.

Actually i think that we only know of two situations when they were used. Discord and Nightmare Moon. Tirek they fought themselves more than likely. Considering sombra was in any state to return it is likely they fought him too (if the elements could put down discord, sombra would have been far easier). There are likely many other foes that popped up considering its equestria after all. And they really only had discord's statue lying around.
I do think that people exagerrate their powers to certain degrees, but at the same time i think they are much more powerful than you seem to think. Celestia defended equestria alone for a thousand years, without the elements, which she could not properly use alone, and without back up by another powerful being.

I tend to go more with the route that they are more pacifistic than not and the Elements of Harmony provide them with a way to keep those tendencies, not to mention they care tremendously for their ponies and life. I'd imagine that'd they would call in a 1km wide meteor every time a problem crops up if they weren't pacifistic and didn't care for collateral damage.

I don't agree, because I really have no reason to believe regular unicorn magic couldn't deal with the problem passively (unicorns in the MLP series aren't really known for combat magic).Β I also don't agree because there's been several instances where we've seen Celestia and Luna having trouble with things; the Parasprites dragging Celestia away, Discord in general, Chrysalis, the Plunderseeds... I imagine if Celestia were as people think she was, she wouldn't need the elements, because I doubt she lacks control, and unicorn magic has been shown to do a great many things, including banishing, putting zippers on mouths, turning rocks into finery, etc.
Your argument is basically saying that they're so incredibly strong, they can't actually do anything, which is silly, because by that very argument alone evidence of the contrary is ignored.
Celestia and Luna are definitely strong, but even Lauren Faust stated that she's just "very magical" rather than being any kind of deity.

They're powerful, but as Metal says... If it really came down to it they COULD spearhead a battle. Just not WIN the fight in a matter of minutes, no.
I also prefer the use of unicorns over alicorns as the final solution to magically-related problems. Which is why I'm enjoying Twilight without wings this entire comic... I don't really know WHAT Starflare is so Im just gonna assume a winged, powerful Unicorn alltogether.
Dark Harvest is the prime example of Unicorns at the height of magical prowess... Short of Starswirl.Β
I guess its just a universal statement that at a point your mane starts doin crazy shit when you become strong enough. :3 even Starswirl had a particularly AMAZING beard... No pony else so far.

I don't honestly think there's much difference between an alicorn and a unicorn, beyond the fact that one possesses the traits of all three races.Β In that regard, I don't think Twilight has changed much, beyond maybe being able to cast more complex spells.Β Think of alicorns as a prestige class, I guess?
As for Starflare, his power doesn't lie in his magic so much as it lies in his alterations (which admittedly does have some effect on his magic, though I won't go into that here).Β Dark Harvest? Well, I'll leave you guessing on that one.

I can honeslty, assuming you WON'T explain how things have come to be for Dark Harvest... consider Dark Harvest something of a black hole. He started off as a normal unicorn, but was taught by Starswirl. He exceeded the standard under the teachings of someone very powerful. Through the use of the Dark Crown and all his Soul-jumping nonsense and shenanigans however, he constantly augments his magic to a greater level as time goes on. Once combined with the crown you get the nightmare we have at present :3
No~ There's gotta be some notable difference between Alicorn and Unicorn. obviously a Unicorn CAN threaten an Alicorn but like we said, the acceptions lie in unicorns with the potential to become an Alicorn So in a sense you're probably correct, the difference MIGHT be a prestige class.
Okay Metal, you have me this time x3 Complexity comes with the new wings/horn. But aside from that, raw magical potential comes from the Unicorn base.

when this guy appeard propertly (not the old carcase), he was complete. in this moment looks like the regen factor is prior a important trouble in the battle (even if all the scenario looks like the orstein /sough battle in dark souls!)
