Of course, the comic isn't done yet, and Metal has proved himself to be THE master of misdirection, subterfuge and red herrings with this story.

Ok, that's it! It was only a passing thought before, but now I'm sure: Big Macintosh is suicidal, but he doesn't want to take the coward's way out, instead opting to go out like a hero. Either that or he's not working correctly upstairs!

Well If you look back at the comic. More specifically when Twilight faked her death, AJ and the town took it really hard. Big Macintosh being one of the more emotionally secure ponies found similarities between the death of his parents and of Twilight. Once Twilight proved to be alive he vowed that he would do anything to make sure that his family and friends wouldn't have to feel that pain again, convincing himself that even if he were to die in her place that the town would move on from it better than if she were to die. The fact that he convinced Celestia about this fact says a lot about his character both in canon and in the comic. He is the true embodiment of a soldier. The fact that he is so willing to die for the one he loves is a testament to the show's Big Macintosh and how the fandom sees him. It's not about him wanting to die. Heck he even says that he doesn't want to. But he sees no other way.
