I believe they gave them different names in German as well (except for Dave), but I don't remember what names exactly since I've only watched that episode in German like once or twice, I prefer the English dub for the most part

I don't think all of the German names are translated either, sometimes the translation of the original names doesn't work due to syllable-numbers or lip-sync so the dubbers think of new names that are somewhat close to the original names or at least have a similar feel to it (Dire, Dread, Dark all have a dark and scary meaning, if things like horrible or disgusting are the closest thing lip-sync wise in translation then they fit well enough
on the other hand, there's also shows where absolutely unnecessary name-changes are made, the english dub of the anime Detective Conan aka Case Closed for example, in German we have their original Japanese names, which aren't even hard to memorize or pronounce (Kogoro Mori, Ran, Shinichi, Ayumi, Heiji etc), but in the English dub apparently they gave them typical American names instead or something? And all that achieved is to make it impossibly hard to find fanart and such...

Yeah, I hate it when names get translated/changed too, I mean, sometimes it HAS to be done, like how Moana was changed to Vaiana in Germany due to the name Moana being trademarked already or something, but if it's possible to keep the original name for a character, keep it

in the episode there were four Dream Beavers (Dire [purple], Dread [orange], Dark [red] and Dave [blue]) who went after the turtles in their sleep, Freddy Krueger style to eat up their life force, nearly killing them (they even managed to get Donnie to stop breathing before April and Casey were able to save them)
At first each Beaver went after only one turtle, Dark Beaver, the one I used here, went after Donnie, Dire went after Leo, Dread after Raph and Dave went for Mikey

if you like dark TMNT taking on more of a Horror movie style, you'll love the first few episodes of season 3 XD (the bold ones are the most horror movie like eps)
S3 E1 is kinda like Jason with a huge mutant guy taking one after another captive and even sort-of killing Raph
S3 E2 Bigfoot episode, but not like in other shows where they go search for Bigfoot, no, it's kind of a romance instead.. also there's The Finger
S3 E3 is like the movie "The Thing", if I remember that right (never seen that movie, only clips, seems pretty accurate), this one's actually said to be the scariest TMNT episode of them all, or at least most disturbing
S3 E4 Frog Mutants who hate humans
S3 E5 is the Dream Beaver's episode, pretty much Freddy Krueger, except every beaver has his own nightmare-style which is awesome
S3 E6 not sure if I should bold this or not... Donnie's face alone in this later on in the ep is nightmare fuel, kinda... it's a car-racing episode which has Donnie and Casey actually working together
S3 E7 A "blind" April and Leo -who can hardly walk- have to save everyone else from the Chimera aka Turducken, a giant bird-fish-worm mutant
S3 E8 spiritual training, this one's just epic, after this ep they had back to the city
I really suggest you check these episodes out, at least the bolded ones

oh, it can be dramatic and gutsy, alright, they've killed off Master Splinter TWICE
and don't even get me started on all the messed up Shredder clone-mutants, mutated Shredder himself or ZOMBIE Shredder...

This show is not afraid of being scary, cutting off character's limbs or even killing characters off (even if it's only temporary in some cases)

Well, even though they're fun and pizza loving, they do live in a serious world full of hardships and death
Donnie even almost committed cold-blooded murder early on in Season 5 as revenge for a guy building anti-mutant weapons and nearly having Donnie and Mondo Gecko cut open in an earlier episode
I dunno how far you ever checked the episodes out, but even in Season 1 and 2 there were pretty serious and/or scary moments
Parasitica for example, they all got mind-controlled and nearly eaten by mutant wasps
Slash and Destroy (this one finally got me stuck to the show actually) had Raph's own pet mutate and beat Donnie and Mikey half to death
The Pulverizer Returns has a fanboy of the turtles (who'd gotten some training from Donnie, who sees himself responsible for the kid) join the Foot and after wanting to use his position in the Foot to give the Turtles inside info, he volunteers for the Foot's mutating experiment and painfully gets himself turned into a mass of acidic goo and organs, this is less scary, but serious and heartbreaking for Donnie who keeps him in his lab from then on
Invasion Of The Squirrelnoids is probably the first horror movie adaptation/parody they did (unless you count Parasitica?) it's like Alien, but with squirrel mutants XD also after this episode Mikey kept a fear of squirrels which is a nice continuity detail
A Chinatown Ghost Story has April kidnapped by an old spirit who also takes control of Leo, Raph and Mikey and gives them wheather powers (flash, thunder and wind) to use them as guards/soldiers to fight off anyone trying to get to him and April while he drains her of her mental powers
The Creeping Doom has the mutant that I said is kinda like Jason return and work with another mutant all while Donnie turns completely stupid due to some mutagen experiment spilling on him, Donnie's behaviour actually makes this episode rather funny, but the mere fact that they don't have him to help throughout this episode even though they seriously need it is great
The Fourfold Trap literally has the turtles being tortured with heat, blades, electro-shocks and mutagen to lure out Splinter
oh and about the "pizza-loving"... in Pizza Face there was a pizza mutant that used pizza to drug people (including April, Splinter, Leo, Donnie and Raph) and mind-controlled Splinter and the turtles while wrapping the humans up in pizza to eat them and Mikey was the only one left to try and save everyone, it's kind of a disturbing episode, I guess, but mostly funny due to how Mikey handles pizza and stuff
