Description
It's been said that Theseus and the twins, Castor and Pollux, were all aboard the Argos when it set sail, yet there are too many contradictions about that particular detail, given how some versions of the tale say that Theseus was still in the Underworld. Plus, there's also the fact that Theseus went into the Underworld right after he abducted Helen, the sister of Castor and Pollux, to be his wife, only for the brothers to rescue Helen while Theseus was imprisoned by Hades - and for good measure, capture Theseus' mother to make her the handmaid of Helen. So what to do with my own version of these events?
I decided that, after Theseus was rescued by Heracles, he returned to Athens - still the king, but also in disgrace. He was eager to accomplish something that would reclaim his former glory, and considered sacking Troy to rescue his mother... except Athena advised against that. Troy was a POWERFUL city at the time, and what's more, Theseus was the one who started the whole mess in the first place. To continue attacking Troy would only lead to more disgrace.
And so, King Theseus was forced to allow his mother, Aethra, to remain a slave, and he set about trying to find some other heroic quest to take up...
...and thus, he heard about how Hera, queen of the gods, had put out a call for the greatest heroes in the land to set sail on the Argos to assist Jason in his quest to attain the Golden Fleece.
Theseus jumped at the opportunity... not knowing that Castor and Pollux had done the same. Suffice it to say, things were *quite* tense between the three stallions once they arrived at the designated meeting place. Nevertheless, Theseus was determined to see things through and reclaim his former glory...
...except Castor and Pollux had other plans.
When the ship arrived at the river of Cius, Heracles' boyfriend Hylas was abducted by water nymphs, causing Heracles and his comrade Polyphemus to go searching for him. While they were still searching, the Argos began to set sail.
That's when Castor and Pollux took advantage of the situation:
The twins pounced on Theseus, gagged him, before tying him to a tree hidden out of sight of the Argos, where they returned, later claiming he went with Heracles and Polyphemus when it was noticed the latter two were missing as well.
Thus, Theseus was deprived of any glory, and after being found and untied by Heracles, the humiliated stallion despondently returned to Athens.
