These are the four parents of Whirly Paulsen:

From left to right, we have:

Daphne Palmzer, Whirly's biological mother
Miles Palmzer, Daphne's husband
Wendel Paulsen, Whirly's biological father
Jack Paulsen, Wendel's husband

Daphne and Wendel were childhood best friends, and everyone kept on telling them, "You guys would make such a cute couple!" So the two decided after high school to elope, since why not? Only... turns out, as much as they loved being friends, they *hated* being married to each other. So they decided on an amicable divorce... except they discovered Daphne was pregnant.

After a long, serious discussion, Daphne and Wendel decided to go ahead with the divorce anyway, and to split custody: they would each have the baby for a week before handing him over to the other. It took a lot of effort, but somehow they managed to make their situation work, strange though it may be.

Some years passed, and Daphne met Miles Bisman at college. He was studying to be an accountant, she was studying to be a lawyer. They hit it off, fell in love, and decided to get married. Meanwhile, Wendel met Jack Colton at a beach party. It was lust at first sight, which grew into love, and they too decided to tie the knot.

Of course, neither Daphne or Wendel were going to marry anybody that didn't get along with their son, so they made certain that their prospective hubbies met with Whirly before any serious plans were made. Fortunately, Whirly was always a very loving duckling, and he quickly took to Miles and Jack.

Now you might be wondering, what does Whirly call each of his fathers? Wendel is "Dad," Miles is "Papa" and Jack is "Pop."

Here's a bit of info on each parent:

Daphne is a woman who "has it all." 52 years old, she's a partner at a prestigious law firm, has a good relationship with her husband, son and ex-husband (and said ex's own significant other), not to mention a beachside condo.

Miles is an accountant. 53 years old, he treasures his life with Daphne, especially after he grew up with a domineering narcissist for a mother. That same mother tried to sabotage her son's relationship with Daphne from the very beginning, pulling as many cheap stunts as possible - even trying to spill red wine over Daphne's white dress at the wedding, though thankfully Wendel and Jack intervened before she got close. However, the final straw came when one day, little Whirly ran up to his mother, crying hysterically because Miles' mother had told the duckling that as soon as Daphne and Miles started having babies of their own, Whirly would have to go and live with Wendel and Jack full time and never see Daphne again. Daphne was outraged, but Miles was livid. He finally had enough and cut his mother out of his life, forbidding her from every coming near him, his wife or his stepson ever again. By coincidence, Daphne and Miles ended up never having children of their own, not that they minded.

Wendel is a typical Golden Retriever: bright-eyed, friendly to a fault, playful, golden-hearted... what you'd expect of his breed. He worked as a lifeguard for Diamond City, although this meant that he was also apart of the fire department, as well as a beach maintenance team. This resulted in Wendel being able to score an early retirement at the age of 50. So, now at the age of 52, he lives a leisure-filled life with his husband in their beach-house. Wendel does all the cooking, while Jack does the cleaning. They spend their days wearing either briefs or speedos, rarely going anywhere that would require them to wear pants.

Jack is the oldest of the bunch at 54. Like Miles, he had toxic family members who he has now cut out of his life. In fact, he had only just ran away from them and moved to Diamond City when he happened to meet Wendel at the beach party. Jack had no intention of getting involved in anything serious... yet he still ended up falling madly in love with the Golden Retriever anyway. The stallion was nervous when he found out Wendel had a kid... but even that fear was alleviated when Jack met Whirly:

Whirly: (taking for granted that Jack was going to become another dad) "Hi, Pop!"
Jack: "...Pop?" (swoops the little duckling into his arms, his stony heart melted)

Normally, Jack is a very sarcastic individual. Quite the gruff stallion, few people are safe from his sharp wit. Although Jack is more patient and softer with the people he loves, such as his husband and Daphne and Miles. But the one person in the world Jack cannot be sarcastic with in any capacity is Whirly. He loves his son too much - and yes, Jack does not refer to Whirly as his "stepson." As far as the stallion is concerned, the mallard is his *son*, and that's that.

Fun facts:

-Daphne and Miles' species are a reference to the parents of Scott from "The Class Menagerie." Scott was an iguana, and while his father was the same species, his mother was a duck (in that comic, different species could interbreed with one another).

-Originally Miles was going to be a more traditional green iguana, but after I discovered photos of a blue one, I knew I had to go with that. x3

-The names "Daphne" and "Miles" are a reference to Daphne and Niles from the sitcom "Frasier."

-Miles took on Daphne's surname as an act of further cutting ties with his narcissistic mother.

-Daphne's surname, "Palmzer", is the 'John Travolta' version of Wendel's surname, "Paulsen."

-Wendel and Jack are a reference to Mr. Peanutbutter and Bojack Horseman. Because why not?

-The names "Wendel" and "Jack" are also a reference to Wendy and Jack from "The Shining." Because why not?

-Jack's "diamond" mark on his belly is a reference to Diamond from this comic: www.furaffinity.net/view/24162… but I put the mark in a different place to make Jack different from Diamond... and I put it over his navel because I was thinking of a certain bellybutton-loving friend of mine, .

-I haven't mentioned Jack's occupation yet: like Wendel, he managed to score an early retirement after working several years for the Postal Service... which means that Wendel, a dog... is in love with... and married to... a mailman.

-Jack may have let himself go, but he's still strong enough to lift Whirly up like how he did when the mallard was a duckling: youtu.be/ym_at6mNX6s?t=34

-Whirly was a chubby child who grew into a skinny teenager. This is a reference to how Launchpad McQuack was a chubby child in the 2017 version of "DuckTales," as well as to how he was a skinny teenager in the 1987 version. But further reason for this is to explain how Whirly got to be in such great shape himself: when he was a fat kid, his parents were worried about his health, but didn't want to hurt his feelings.

Fortunately, Whirly ended up announcing his desire to become a pilot someday, and Jack told him, "Well, son, you'll have to exercise a lot to prepare for that!" And so, Whirly did just that, with all four of his parents joining in to encourage him. This helped for when the young mallard hit his growth spurt and became skinny in his teens. He was already used to exercising and lifting weights and whatnot.

When Whirly graduated high school and went off to become a pilot (among a few other things), only Wendel kept up the same exercise routine, having grown used to it (even fond of it). Hence why he's the only one of the four parents who's still shredded after all these years. Daphne and Miles did work out semi-regularly over the years, but Jack decided he had done his part, so let himself go (although he still does go on walks with Wendel, and lifts a few weights to keep his biceps around). Fortunately, Wendel thinks Jack looks even better with that great big belly of his.
