This piece seems very crude to me. Knowing that this lizard seems either dead or no far from it might have induced this feeling. His distorted pose and underweight and dehydrated look makes the instant intense. I think the contrasting colors also helps in raising the intensity. The angle of the picture goes with his fallen crest spine and his tiltled head, dramatic, and he seems to be half hidden in darkness at the lower left, when opposed to the upper right corner, more brightly luminated. He's not in a nature background, and the cement like texture on which he's lying emits cold and, again some roughness.
Poor thing. Great piece.
