I've been told that the animators gave him a rat's tail occasionally as a joke, that he was supposed to be a chihuahua and that they are 'rat dogs'

Really? That's interesting. But the removed his tail throughout the series. I prefer him having a tail. Stimpy should have had one too. At least I myself haven't seen one on him in the show, but I could be wrong.
