Optimus: "no talking in the library. This is your ONLY Warning!"
Those who have watched Transformers: Prime, played any of the "Cybertron" games,
or, even know the so-labeled Aligned continuity will get the subject matter of this motivational.
And, for those of you you don't know..Allow me to explain.
In Hasbro's revised continuity for Transformers, before the war errupted on Cybertron.
alot of the Autobot and Decepticon character had VERY different professions, and personalities.
In Optimus case, his name was originally Orion Pax, and he was a "Data Archivist"
in the Iacon Hall of Records, servung under the Master Archivist: Alpha Trion.
Apparently in human terms, this is the same as being a Librarian, or a Clerk.
(in fact, Megatron once mocked Optimus Prime by refering to him as such.)
"Prime" also revealed that Optimus/Orion's specialty was decoding encrypted data.
which is comparable to being a computer hacker, decyphering complicated coding.
SO, not only was Optimus a Librarian, he was also a "Nerd"
Well, ONE thing is for sure..You'd BETTER NOT return your books late.

Fun Fact: In the first Transformers cartoon ever (Transformers Genaration one (G1) ) Orion Pax was also an archivist and or a mecanic before he became Optimus Prime.
So he has always been a "Nerd" aswell as a badass.

well, yes, he WAS a librarian once, but he's become so much more than that now. just goes to show that the greatest of people can come from the humblest of Origins.

I'm not really surprised that this is what Optimus did before the War for Cybertron and becoming leader of The Autobots. He's a highly intelligent guy that shows great interest in learning new things.
Now if Hasbro decided to that Duke from G.I. Joe ran a library at some point then I'd be surprised.

While Primal's backstory hasn't been touched upon that much,
Beast Wars DID make clear that Optimus Primal, and his Maximal team were 'space explorers'
and, despite the usual war against Megatron, and his Predacons,
Primal STILL tried to stay true to form, and study the fauna, wildlife and architecture of the planet they were on.
In human terms, Optimus PRIME may keep records..but, Optimus PRIMAL wrote them.
so, Primal is a step above Prime in that he's a in-the-field researcher, rather than an office researcher.

Is Optimus a family name, or like Mohammad or John, and just a very common name?

To my knowledge, Optimus Primal took the name "Optimus" out of respect for Optimus Prime (who by the Maximal/Predacon era, had become a legendary figure, like Abraham Lincoln is Today.)
Likewise, the Predacon Leader Megatron deliberately named himself after the Decepticon leader
thinking it would automatically make him "Top Dog" amongst the Predacons (despite this, the Predacon leaders denote him as a "renegade.")
It should be worth noting that even the Original Megatron took his name from somebody else.
apparently, "Megatron" was the name of the original thirteen primes: 'Megatronus Prime' (AKA "The Fallen.")
So, back to the subject matter: Optimus Primal isn't related to Optimus Prime in any way..He just named himself after him out of respect.
Be no different than me naming myself "Robin Hood", or something like that.

wait, Beast Wars takes place in prehistoric Earth, the original cartoon took place in the "modern" day. How is Prime already famous during Primal's day?

Time Travel was involved.
The Maximals and Predacons officially exists thousands of years after the Autobot/Decepticon War ended
(where some surviving Decepticons, like Ravage, were granted amnesty.)
when Predacon Megatron stole a 'golden disk' (originally made by humans in modern times) and fled,
Optimus Primal and his team of Maximals followed them..into a Time Warp, that transported them through time.
At first, they though the planet they were on was alien in nature (due to a second moon.)
but, when the fake moon (really a Vok Super Weapon) was destroyed, the truth became clear.
While Megatron's original plan was to harvest the energon seeded by the Vok on Prehistoric Earth.
his MAIN reason for time travel, was to uncover the still crashed ARK, and rewrite history by destroying the still stasis locked Optimus Prime.
Primal foiled this plan by keeping Prime's spark in his body while repairs were made to Prime (which gave Primal a new body, dubbed "Optimal Optimus")
Megatron then made another play, by stealing the original Megatron's spark (which gave him a Dragon mode)
hijack the sunken Decepticon ship, the Nemesis, and use it to bombard a tribe of Protohumans (this was the second time he tried to destroy the human race, believing they were the secret to the Autobots success. but, the Predacon-turned-Maximal Dinobot thwarted this plan at the cost of his own life) AND, destroy the Ark itself.
To make a long story short: TIME TRAVEL.

Yeah I loved that series. Megatron of the Predicons messed up the time line after finding the golden disc, was confusing at first but when they found the Ark along with the Autobots and Decepticons inside in statis lock it made sense afterwards lol. It's pretty cool watching that series as a kid and looking back at the original Transformers series. Beast Machines kinda made it really strange when Optimus Primal formatted Cybertron into a different planet.

At first, many thought that Beast Wars was some strange reboot
(hence the fans griping over "Truck, not Monkey." when it came to Optimus.)
BUT, when that bit with the ARK came. Fans calmed down,
as they finally realized that Beast Wars was still G1, just in the future (sort of.)
My favorite back then was Dinobot, as even with the dated CG animation,
he looked like one of the Velociraptor's from Jurassic Park talking, and interacting.
Personally, I think that Beast Wars needs to be looked at again.
such as given an updated game, a revamp series, and even some attention in the films
(Bayformer, or not. Seeing Beast Wars in theaters would still be a great watch,
and would be different from what's been done so far.)
