Why doesn't anyone remember that even in Magical Girl shows like Sailor Moon, all of the Sailor Scouts died horribly in it. Even Princess Serenity in Sailor Moon committed Frikkin Suicide!

Though it is different. For these reasons.
1. There is no Queen Beryl/Rita Repulsa-style Head Honcho Villain who sits on her throne and sends out the bad guys after them in each episode.
2. They never say stuff like "We Will Win By Using The Powers Of Love!"
3. The Silly and Ridiculous-looking Art Styles of the Witches
4. It's more ACTION PACKED!!!

It's also a lot more philosophical, especially in the last two episodes. I agree on what you said about the witches, but I think their designs are supposed to be symbolic. The only witch that I think is the most disturbing looking is the one that appears in Rebellion. Also, how much of that stuff was cut out of the 4kids dub of Sailor Moon?

Sailor Moon was quite symbolic too.
-Like all the Sailor Scouts are based on planets of the Solar System, and have powers relating to the Greek Gods they are based on.
-Or Queen Beryl and her lackeys, Zoisite, Kunzite, Jadeite, and Nephrite, being based on precious jewels and having personalities that match the Gemology of each Gemstone.
-I also remember some symbolic stuff in it like Usagi being based on this Japanese legend of Rabbits who lived on the Moon.
-And this part where Mamoru's flower being destroyed was to represent a love being lost or something like that.

Here's some other terrible stuff I recall happening in Sailor Moon, aside from the Sailor Scout's deaths and Princess Serenity's suicide.
-The reason Prince Endymion died was that his 4 humble servants, Zoisite, Kunzite, Jadeite, and Nephrite betrayed him, murdered him out of spite, then took sides with Queen Beryl.
-Also, there was this one episode I recall, where there was a Mega Torturous scene where Usagi had to climb Barefoot up a Massive Staircase covered in Sharp Thorns, in order to reach her friends and save them.
-And they had an episode where the girls were all obsessed with these fluffy rabbits, but then the rabbits turned out to be these demonic, soul-sucking creatures. Sometimes I feel that Kyubey might have been inspired by those little Soul-Stealing bunnies from that episode.
-And then there was those episodes in the amusement park where Ami (Sailor Mercury) was the only one safe because she couldn't be frozen or something like that.
-And then when they were "normal girls" I recall that Usagi would frequently have PTSD-like nightmares from fighting Queen Beryl and the Negaverse for so long.
-Sailor Saturn's whole first arc was very depressing, too.
-Last but not least, the Sailor Galaxia arc of the series, where everyone was either Dead, or Dying, or Had Amnesia and couldn't remember anything.


There's many other Magical Girl shows chock full of girls dying horribly too.
Like Rozen Maiden, Lyrical Nanoha, and Revolutionary Girl Utena for instance. Heck, Utena had more terrible deaths than Sailor Moon and Maho Shoujo combined!

Yeah, I remember watching some of the darker parts of Sailor Moon as a child. I guess it'd be hard to compare whether or not Madoka Magica is darker since the latter is very short compared to Sailor Moon. The most messed up stuff we see in Madoka Magica is seeing the events that lead up to someone becoming a witch. In the anime/films, we only see that with three characters and all three of them are very depressing to watch

Apart from the aforementioned, other dark and depressing things that happen are the following:

-Mami gets her head bit off by a witch early on

-What people under a witch's kiss are like. Episode 4 says it all

-The fact that some Magical Girls would be willing to let a few people die to witch familiars just so they can get a potential grief side from a newly formed witch

-Magical Girls are essentially animated corpses

-Sayaka's descent into madness and despair when she realizes she can't be with Kyouske

-Kyoko's backstory and how she indeverntly caused the death of her family

-That one scene where Sayaka kills a couple of thugs while on a train

-Homura's backstory on why she's the way she is

-When Mami loses it and tries to kill Kyoko and Homura (former of which she succeeds in) in order to prevent them from becoming witches

-The end of the third timeline which follows directly after the above

-And finally, the fact that all Magical Girls are essentially energy resources

Oh. Because if you are aware of his true nature, then you would understand why this TF pic is tagged with mind control (well in the FA version of this . I know this anime gets real sad, but this character is one of the reasons why I want to finish it...even if I will end up hating him (or maybe love to hate).
