Description

At long last, I finally got around to watching Wolfwalkers and it was nothing short of spectacular. The colors, the shape language, the animation, all of it breathtaking. I even liked how you could see the construction/sketch lines in some of the Scenes. As someone who appreciates the process of sketching that made me feel good.

It was quite the entertaining affair, but I did leave me with a quandary regarding the unique transformation. It was clear that if you were wounded in wolf form, the wound will Be passed on to your human body, which was illustrated in a scene. So, I wondered if the same logic with apply when it comes to the consumption of food as a wolf. As a carnivorous canine, I’m certain one’s stomach would have no problem breaking down any manner of grass, river water, rabbit, or unsuspecting squirrel one may have consumed while in said form. But the human stomach might get a bit queasy handling such a confection. My assumption is that one wouldn’t fill up on birds as a wolf, and then wake up with a belly full of bird meat and fathers. My theory became something along the lines of the wolf body existing separate from the human body, in a little pocket dimension of sorts. And when its wolf time, A spirit portal opens and releases the wolf from that pocket dimension. But, from what I’ve read, I don’t think Cartoon Saloon went into depth about how it all happens.

I gathered a few similar themes within the film Luca as well. (Misunderstood creature, persecution, friendship, ect.) so I use one of my favorite scenes in Luca to articulate the questions I had about Wolfwalkers. It was a lot of fun to nail down the designs of the characters, as well as implementing elements from my own style. Credit to Cartoon Saloon for a portion of background I used to tie the comic together the movie’s backgrounds are fantastic. If I revisit this film for art inspiration, I’d love to se how much more I could do with this style.
