Description
The sorcerer who made a monstrosity out of Alice possessed terrible power. He used it to create dark things that brought pain to the world. His cruelty and disregard for life made him a symbol of hate and fear. His brother, Antinoc, on the other hand was a kind old wizard that had a love of creation. His magics were a strange type, for he used his power to create objects and artifacts of great wonder and curiosity. He was known as the Great Artificer and his creatures and constructs of brass, cogs, and wood boggled the minds of all who saw them. He believed in helping those with less means than his own and would lend his power to all those in need that came to his strange and wondrous tower. On one cloudy afternoon, whilst studying how nuthatches balanced themselves vertically on trees, he came across a young woman lying in a ditch off the path. Her body had been horribly mangled and she was barely clinging to life. Antinoc knew that without his immediate help, she would surely die. He rushed her back to his tower without hesitation.
He used every method and technique known in medicine. He used every spell and trinket he could think of. Yet the girl's injuries were far to grave. Her body was beyond repair. He could not bear the sight of her suffering, and yet he could not possibly let her die. It was in that moment that Antinoc decided to try something never before attempted by any artificer. Using his most powerful spells as well as his boundless skills as an inventor, he created a new body for her. He salvaged what organs he could such as her brain, eyes, and heart. He gave her a core powered by springs, cogs, and magic. Her heart pumped with the power of steam. His spells kept her alive long enough to complete the procedure.
When he was finished, he had created a wonder that astounded even himself. She was his greatest creation. Unfortunately the majority of her memories had been lost to her, due to the severity of her original injuries. Antinoc vowed to help her discover her shattered past. All she really could remember was her name, Lita.
The wizard used his vast knowledge and extensive library to educate the girl. He taught her astronomy from his observatory and how to chart the path of the planets. He took her on walks through the wooded path and taught her of the animals that dwelt there and the various medicinal uses of the plants that grew. Philosophy, history, music, mathematics, physics, and literature all became a part of her studies. More than his pupil, she grew to be as his child for whom he cared dearly. Lita was a gentle soul and ever eager to learn more. She was fascinated by all of his mechanical creatures. He taught her how to care for them and how to fix them when they were damaged or injured. All was well for the wizard and his strange, adopted girl.
Yet the wizard felt in his heart that she could not stay forever. He knew that she would eventually wish to find her own way in the world. Already the girl asked questions about her past that he could not fully answer. It was likely that some of her memories would begin returning to her and he was obligated to help her search for clues to her broken history. Antinoc realized that the world might not take to her current appearance. Unlike the tiny creatures that inhabited the grounds of his tower, Lita had been human once.
Antinoc resolved himself to modifying Lita's body so that she could fit in flawlessly with the rest of the world. With a heavy heart he set about making the girl a synthetic, yet realistic human body. He would spend many sleepless nights in his workshop casting spells and crafting it. He would be sad to part with Lita, but he knew that his teachings would get her far in life. After all, she had been given a second chance, and it would make the old wizard proud to see her happy.
