Here's an illustration I did for Illmatar (then best friend, now wife) way back in 1997 before the Rochester BotCon. It's the main characters from her "Maelstrom" fanfic. It's dark and gritty and enthralling.If you're interested, you can check out her story and artwork at her own DA page. [link]

And Homestead, EEKS! We met a family in the Air Force one time that was stationed...oh, I can't recall, but it was where the volcano erupted and covered up the base on some island somewhere in the Pacific. They lost everything and the base was even shut down. Then, they were stationed at Homestead and, lo and behold, but nothing like a huge freaking hurricane to come and destroy anything they'd acquired since their losses from the volcano. Of course, they were moved again. It was quite an amazing story...And their sense of humor about it certainly stuck with me. I guess one has to have a sense of humor after all that. At that point, they were simply thankful that their family was still intact, which is, of course, all that matters, but I can't imagine losing ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING that I own; I'd be devastated over losing all my family photos alone!

Homestead really looked like a bomb had been dropped. I will never forget the eerieness of it all...
I think having a sense of humor is the only way you COULD get through something like that. I would be upset if I lost my TF toys and comic book collection but they are just stuff. If I lost my wife or any of my pets THEN I would be a total psychotic basket case. Photos are cherished so Illmatar and I embarked on scanning all our prized photos and burning them on CDs which we now keep in a safe deposit box at the bank.

That's a great idea! We have a lot of photos scanned as well, but the CDs are in our house. Perhaps it's time to move those things someplace else...or make several copies of each of them and put them in our parents' houses, etc.
