Description
Many people have commented on my coloring job, so i just thought I'd share my coloring process with everyoneThere's alot of panels and much to read but it may be worth your time if you're interested in coloring pencil.
I mostly use Prismacolor pencils because they're really soft and lots of color comes off. Derwent is another nice brand and they work well with Prisma, but they don't look all that great by themselves.
Here's the finished version. [link]
This tutorial is best for Prisma, Derwent, or other high-quality coloring pencils, not low-quality pencils like Crayola or Roseart.

I don't understand how I can follow your instrutions to the letter, and yet my colors don't come out nearly this smooth and clean. I'm using the exact same pencils!! Any advice? (And if you could tell me what colors you use for blond hair, I would be super grateful.)

Hmmm, I'm not sure, the technique you use may differ from mine, do you use a circular motion while you color? Are you a bit heavy-handed? These things can effect how the color is absorbed. And what type of paper do u use? Computer paper is a big no-no, the best paper to use with coloring pencils is a lightly textured paper. Some drawing books tell you how much "tooth" the paper has--paper with more tooth is rougher & used for charcoal or chalk and paper with less tooth is smoother and is used for pencil or marker.
I hope this helps you!

Thanks! I'm using art paper, so it has less tooth, but it's not computer paper. I need to try the circular motion, and keeping my hand light. Thanks again!

Thanks. Your coloring really is amazing. Until I saw your art, I didn't know what colored pencils could do.
(How do you make blonde, though?)

Miakas-sister In reply to songofafreeheart [2012-03-02 20:45:36 +0000 UTC]
D'awww
Blonde works like any other haircolor, start light then build up. Here's the combination I use for dirty blonde:
Lemon Yellow (prisma)
Cadmium (derwent)
Spanish Orange (prisma)
Goldenrod (prisma)
Brown Ochre (derwent)
Golden Brown (derwent)
Lilac (prisma)
For a light blonde only lemon yellow, cadium, spanish orange, and lilac.
After coloring all the light areas with the yellows, I use lilac for shading, then color over with spanish orange. Next I use brown ochre and golden brown to make the shaded areas darker. Its difficult to explain without visual lol. I'll be making another tutorial when I've got more time, I'll send u a link when its finished

nice tut! but, uh... for a blender, could i just use a white colored pencil? like crayola? or a white prsimacolor?
π: 0 β©: 1
Miakas-sister In reply to animeluver1155 [2010-10-16 00:46:04 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I use white to blend, there's also a colorless blender, but it doesn't give as smooth of a look as the white does And I would advise against using white crayola...the cheap brands don't blend very well. If you use the cheap brands, it's really hard to get alot of thick, vivid color on the page, and it can't get the same smooth look as prisma coloring pencils.
In stores and online, prisma is pretty expensive but there are certain places were u could find them for cheap. Like Ebay, sometimes people will sell sets for %50 less than the prices sold in stores. I got a set of 60 that cost $30, but in art stores, they sell the same set for over $100

OH, also, you said I could use a white Prismacolor pencil to blend, right? May I use a white kneaded eraser, or a blending stump? (I'm pretty new to Prismacolors and traditional art D: )
π: 0 β©: 1
Miakas-sister In reply to animeluver1155 [2010-10-20 01:04:25 +0000 UTC]
No, kneaded erasers and blending stumps are used for more chalky media, like charcoal, chalk pastel, even graphite pencil, but not for coloring pencil.
Kneaded erasers are used to pick up color and clean up your paper. E.g. if you were using chalk pastel and u put too much red on the page, you can blot some of it off with a kneaded eraser.
Blending stumps are used to push around color and to push the grains of the medium ur using into the page. E.g. if u were using pencil and u want to cover an area of ur page with a light layer of gray, you can color over one spot then use the blending stump to spread the graphite around the area.
Was that helpful? I hope I explained properly

π: 0 β©: 1
Miakas-sister In reply to animeluver1155 [2010-10-23 20:35:21 +0000 UTC]
For high quality coloring pencils, prisma white is the best to use to blend. As I said before, you can also use a prisma colorless blender, but they don't get as smooth as the white does. If you don't use prisma or derwent or any of the high quality brands, you shouldn't try blending with white. Because the low quality pencils (crayola, roseart, ect.) can't get the same smooth effect. For low quality pencils, use a colorless blender instead
Later, I'm going to make a better coloring pencil tutorial, so if you wanna add me to ur watchlist I can give you more pointers

er before i actually try out the white blending technique does the same effect applies to faber castells too? and thank god i didn't atcually buy derwents before i found out too late i need another set to compliment it great tutorial by the way and the lilac skin shading is a first i've seen after going through so many tutorials
π: 0 β©: 1
Miakas-sister In reply to hellsangel13 [2010-06-22 15:59:44 +0000 UTC]
Hmm, I'm not sure, I haven't actually used faber castells much If it's soft and sort of waxy-like, I'm sure it will
yeah, derwent is nice, but it doesn't get as thick and vivid as prisma. But really, it doesn't hurt to have several types of pencils. I also use kodinoor, cuz it's really hard and prisma and derwent are both on the soft side
Have you ever used black charcoal? Using different ranges of softness and hardness helps make a much stronger picture; the same can go with coloring pencil.
Thanks! My sis showed me how to use purple instead of black or brown. It really goes help prevent muddiness, if you apply it correctly
π: 0 β©: 1
hellsangel13 In reply to Miakas-sister [2010-06-23 10:17:52 +0000 UTC]
um no it's not waxy but it's soft though. yeah it doesn't but i don't buy stuff that much so i'm don't have much experience.
i tried that and due to me not being able to blend and being a terrible color coordinator she now has dark brown skin with yellow peachy tones. and i did not blend it nicelyD:

Miakas-sister In reply to hellsangel13 [2010-06-24 02:13:36 +0000 UTC]
Oh, i see I know several people on DA who like using faber castells, but if you get the opportunity, try out other types of pencils. You may find that you like some other brand better.
Ohhh I'm sorry You have to be pretty light-handed with certain colors, or else they'll dominate all the others. Like yellow, you have to be careful not to add too much, or your character will look like one of those blonde girls with their fake orange tans
But I made this tutorial last year, and I realize now that I made it more complicated than it really is
So you can blame me for that
Hopefully, I could make a second tutorial soon, a better one.

Oh thank goodness. I was starting to get worried I wasn't going to find a good tutorial for colored pencils. Do you ever use a clear blending pencil?
π: 0 β©: 1
Miakas-sister In reply to Kkarrot [2010-05-08 04:51:50 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, but I find white blends much nicer than the colorless blenders At least, this is the case for prisma pencils
I sometimes use the colorless blender with colors that I want to stay really dark, like red, black, or purple
π: 0 β©: 1
Kkarrot In reply to Miakas-sister [2010-05-11 04:02:14 +0000 UTC]
I recall when I used white to blend it gave it a bit a streaky look. Does adding another layer on top of that take care of that problem?
π: 0 β©: 1
Miakas-sister In reply to Kkarrot [2010-05-13 00:18:46 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, adding another layer of color could help. Also, you don't want to grind the paper with white. But the thing that helps prevent streaking the most is to color in different directions, like in a circular motion. Then you add white over the color in a similar motion.
