Tempest has a soft spot for her son, just as much as Nova has an incredibly soft spot for his mother.

Even after the events of the Storm King's Invasion, when Tempest was reintegrated into pony society, the mare experienced a long battle of self-acceptance. She struggled with the self-consciousness her shattered horn brought her; just the sight of other unicorns reminded her of what was missing. She had to force those intrusive thoughts aside each time. Her broken horn was just as powerful as the pony it belonged to; Twilight taught her this. And yet...

The unexpected happened after her son, Novis, came into her life. Nova as a child never perceived his mother's horn as broken. He'd often brag to his peers about her "open horn" and its powerful magic that could "split a tree in half and set it on fire while she was at it". It bewildered her at first, until she realized something profound:

Novis didn't know any different.

He was born into a world where a unicorn could have just a fragment of a horn and exist as just another unicorn. To Nova, she was simply unique. She was simply "mother". And that realization changed the way she saw herself.

Over the years, Tempest stopped perceiving her horn as "incomplete". It was literally broken, yes, but not incomplete. She's powerful, and whole, all the same.

But that doesn't mean her horn doesn't have some inconveniences. Any moisture that accidentally makes its way into her crackling horn almost always resulted in a sudden electric shock. It was annoying, but seeing as covering her horn would interfere with using her magic, it was an inconvenience she quietly tolerated.

That is until Nova was reminded of said inconvenience one day, and the moment a spark of ideas lit up in his mind, he wordlessly worked away in his room for a good few weeks.

The "Pressure " art dump mentions the moment in time when Nova invented a special water-repelling magic ring for Tempest (which subsequently evolved into the invention of the arcane umbrella). The arcane field the ring produces (horn-shaped purely for aesthetics~) deflects all water properties while allowing Tempest's powerful magic to phase through. Nova surprised Tempest with the gift, and Tempest was delighted (and proud) of his thoughtfulness.
The horn shape is a nice touch. But what gave Tempest true solitude was the realization that the sight of it no longer sparked a need or desire. It's just a curious and fascinating sight, reminding her of just how incredible her son is.

Fun fact: Baby Nova would imitate the sparking of Tempest's horn. That later manifested into his electricity-based magic and spells.
