Description
Here's a map I did last year for a personal project I'm working on. I won't be showing the project itself for what might be a long while but this got scrapped from the project so why not post it.Artwise, I'm pretty happy with it except for the part at the top. The idea was that it's drawn by someone who wasn't sure what they were looking at but now it just looks like I can't draw. It is scrapped because the idea behind it has changed and some landscape features are no longer correct. Oh well, at least I got a step further with the idea
I'm very curious what people think about this.
Made with watercolor, black and colored ink on paper
This one is 17x13 cm
Here's the other map fav.me/d8jcwti
Also, as usual I don't know where to put stuff, which category holds cartography? Hmmm?

It's so intricate. I want to wallpaper my room with that sea. :3 This is spectacular.

Thank you!
I actually had something similar to this ocean painted on the kitchen walls of the house I used to live. To this day I feel very apologetic to the person who had to do the paintover at some point

[the idea was that it's drawn by someone who wasn't sure what they were looking at] - - - If this is the view from which they were looking at it, they must have been pretty damn high up in the sky! xD How were they up there, pray tell?
As a matter of personal taste, I don't think it was the best choice to make such a liberal use of black/dark marker in the oceans and in the northern landmass.
The lower right-hand corner of the image (really, that whole landform) looks great, and, I think that this is in no small part due to the dearth of thick, dark marker strokes there. You do a great job implying the topographical contours of the mountains, and I love the shading—perfectly executed.
The one part about the lower landmass that doesn't quite work for me is the use of all the little dark-red/purplish dots. The lightly-yellow striations in that area work the best, I think, in terms of indicating areas under cultivation.
I do like the idea of using the black marker for the buildings; that makes them stand out. Just don't overdo it.
Personally, I don't care for the way you rendered the ocean. To me, it looks like a giant amoeba growing on the landscape, devouring all in its path. xD

Very good obervation form you! Yes they really are VERY high in the sky I can't give you a precise altitude(yet) but I bet the atmosphere is getting a wee bit thin up there.
FYI: I don't use markers I do all my inkwork with a dip pen with nibs and sometimes a brush.
The darker lines are not supposed to stand out so much as they do at the moment. I left the watercolors underneath a bit too light in this one, especially in the area left of the little island there's supposed to be a rather steep drop. Scanning made the watercolor disappear even more. However I personally do quite like big giant amoebas, so I guess we differ in taste
Happy to hear you like the landmass! I kinda agree on the red dots too. I had to use the ink undiluted because it tends to bleed to much in the paper if I mix it with water so it's a bit too stark.
Overall, these are studies and when I get to a point where I'm ready to make more final maps I 'm going to have to take a closer look at scale and how it reads. You can only go so small or thin with a nib.
Thank you very much for your thoughts!

Thank you Eva and you know what they are. All maps can take you places without ever having to leave the house

I like it, the part you're unhappy with is it the bit that looks like a structure with perspective? I always like when books put the map at the front. Maybe add some stippling or some other texture on the white parts to blend it with the style of the rest of the map. Love your ink work!

Yup that's the bit. It just jars too much with the rest. When I do a new one( once I figured out the concept about the land itself a bit more) I'll make sure to do a few tests before hand. While doing this I was already sort of unsure about some of the features so in this case I'm not too fussed about it I just wanted to do a few maps and to hell with it if I had to scrap it. Love maps in books in particular but all maps are cool to look at. Cheap holiday
And thank you!
