Description
Diadophis punctatus amabilis (Pacific ringneck) from Sonoma Co. California. This was the first snake of 2009 for me. Found on the morning of March 13th under a sheet of tin.
I'm not sure how many ringnecks I ended up finding so far this year, but I stopped counting at 30. It's somewhere around 45 I'd say.

They're really common throughout the US. They're mostly fossorial, however, and aren't found out in the open very often. I stopped counting after the 60th one I found in 2009, and that was just from March until early May.

Eh, I'm usually not one to go looking for snakes, especially with me living in the mountains and the tendency of rattlers and copperheads around here. They tend to come to me though, as through the summer I've found a few young black ratsnakes and a couple of ringnecks, but none have had coloration quite like this one.

This one is from California. There are a few different subspecies out there, but they are all mostly red or orange as opposed to the lighter yellows and oranges you see out here.
Rattlers and copperheads are the best part of going out in this area!

That's really cool. I live in the mountains of Western North Carolina. Even though corns are supposed to be around here, my Dad hasn't seen any, and he has worked for tree companies that clear out dead brush and stuff for almost all his life. First one he saw was the one I brought home, lol.
I love these creatures, it's a shame they carry a lot of prejudice against them.

It sure is. I spend just about all my free time working with them, and I have done a lot of work along the lines of public awareness and whatnot. I just don't get some of the stories that I hear. Some lady told me recently that a 15 foot black rat killed and ate her dog.
