I came up with an idea similar to Starfleet Marines when I devised the SSTF for the Video Game Republic fan-universe within Star Trek. Their ranking, structure, and methods are inspired by the US Marines, Navy SEALs, British Army, SAS, Royal Marines, and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force (even though that was more naval than ground). They basically compliment the standard security officers on ships and stations and stuff. They are kinda like the N7 soldiers from Mass Effect too.
