Description This is incorporating a drawing with one of my fav poems. Medium: Pencil

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

One of my favorite poems as well. Your drawing flows very smoothly with the poem.

i really like this drawing, superbly done with the most fitting of perspectives did you use a reference and how lond did it take to draw? you say it's a sketch but this is just brilliant
i'm sure this looks even better on the actual real life paper you did it on

thanks for the nice comment. The field near my house I've used as a reference for setting and I used myself as a figure reference by taking a photo in that position. Well I'm glad you like this sketch. I appreciate your view and critique

Oh btw, yeah drawings do look better in real/actual life. Scans and prints never justify the original work, but that's just how it is .

I've read relatively little of Hughe's work, but I do love what little I have seen by him. This is also an amazingly simple, and still calm and powerful poem; I really get a serene feeling when I read this.
And your picture.. Wow, everything about it is so calming. The perspective, with the sky and the grass and the feather (all aesthetic elements) almost as one constant entity, all as 'brethren images', one might say; it's a very wonderful picture. Also the person lying there, relaxing and probably dreaming. It adds a more familiar, everyday element to the picture and then romantisizes it.
The pencilwork is also magnificent, I mean all the textures and colours and different hues and shades.. It also has a dreamy look to it, like it was drawn on sepia.coloured paper.

Excellent work.

i'd fav this, but you know why i'll postpone that.

it's such a nice thing to see that words, which do accompany submissions every now and then in the description, are actually a part of the original drawing, a handwriting is so much more expressive! the frog-perspective works excellent, that little boy, lying in the grass, is a scene which is quite familiar to everyone i think and thus creates that striking atmosphere that i love so much about this picture.

hmm thanks Merle. I agree about the handwriting- it is more expressive. I sometimes look for people's signature or anything hand written to get a better sense of who they are. There's a lot to be said about someone's character based on their hand writing. I've yet to see yours I print and handwrite. How about you?

First of all the whole imagery as far as it relates to the poem is wonderful. It really gets the message through. The actual drawing itself has been done with such a beautiful soft touch, which gives it a really dreamy feeling.

lately i've been commenting on people's drawings very rarely, but i've just got to comment on this one. i think it's extremely lively and very, very beautiful, and the perspective is flawless. i think the neutral colour scheme works really well, creating a dreamy feeling for the viewer, and it's always great to see a drawing that actually relates to the poem it's attached to. X) even still, there is something about this picture that won't make me want to fav it.. i don't know exactly what it is. but hell, it's really good, so i'll fav it anyway. ;D

michael1981 In reply to silverie [2003-12-25 09:16:22 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. Art is subjective and it's beauty or appeal is solely dependent on the viewer. I like the poem considerably. I would have liked to spend more time developing this drawing to a higher standard. But again, sketchbook drawings at my school is something that is done on the side, and thus I spend not as much time on them as I want to. Secondly, the scan of the drawing does not do justice to the work since the scan quality is never perfect. Thanks for the comment and input.
