Description Alpha Flight # 87 pg. # 1 Splash (Wolverine)

To start my run on Alpha Flight I thought I'd ink the 1st page to get things rolling...
and with Wolverine jumping at the reader..
we were off....

Fabian Nicieza was great to work with...
people still talk to me about this run of books almost 15 years later..
oh....and "Jim Lee" covers didn't hurt either.

PS.
back in the 80's I got so sick of going to comicbook shows..
and being asked to draw "Wolvie"..
and "could you please have him with his claws out, man"..
that I think I'd rather have my fingernails pulled out than draw another con sketch of Wolvie..
SNIKT......................!!!!!!!!!!

Love the picture, but his claws don’t look sharp or correct!

You know, Wolverine is more popular than Superman. If he edges Spidey out for the top spot, then you won't just be drawing Wolverine con sketches, we'll all be breathing Wolverine.

And he's hairy, booze stained and smelly.

But it's all good, the 80s are over. Oh, wait, we've got a revival on the rise.

Those claws are absurd.

The ones I drew..
or just in general..???

it does get tricky speaking about superheroes..

like who is more realistic..
Superman or Batman..???

a guy who flies or a guy swinging around holding onto a bat-rope with one arm..
not attached to anything...

Does Canada still have that funky 50 dollar bill..???
the one with all the horses in a circle facing inward..

so that it's mostly a bill with alot of horse's asses on it..
I hung onto one of those for years..

it was too cool.!!!!!!!!!!

As a long-time Alpha Flight fan, Sadly, this is one of the issues I don't have. LOVE the texture on this one - Logan looks grisly, just as a stumpy Canadian should be (looks like my uncle). 'Tho why he has a half-dozen rulers attached to the back of his hands, I'll never know... maybe this was his way of embracing the metric system that us Canadians seem to enjoy so much

But really, great work.

I read some of those issues and I always wondered about why you did the claws that way?
I admit I bought the issues because of the Jim Lee covers but I enjoyed reading them very much!!!

This was the way I drew him at the time..
some people drew the claws differently..

I think after an issue or two I started to draw them sharper..
At the time Wolverine didn't interest me as a character..
he was/ and is over used..

but the claws do look strange after all these years..
ah.....
I took a shot..it didn't work out..

I remember that. I also think during that time Wolverine was an extremely overused character. He was in 75% of every Marvel comic during the 90's.

Yeah, Logan and Cable were arguably the MOST used characters in the 90's.... Now that's only half right (Wolverine's in, what, 19 books now??)

The funny thing is I never thought Cable was all that interesting to begin with!! It annoyed me that this character who popped out of nowhere would have such an impact on the X-Men!
And yeah, Wolverine is still overused. Jeez.

Are the claws supposed to be squared off on the ends? I never read the book, perhaps thats just the way his claws looked like for that series. And don't worry about me asking for a sketch of him, I'm more into Power Girl. Yeah, I'm one of those guys...

Awesome pic! I like the use of perspective especially.

That was a pretty good run, actually. Achieved the amazing task of making Alpha Flight readable, and in a good way.
