Description
Here are the basic steps I go through when doing these variant cover drawings. First, I rough out a pose very loosely in pencil (4b) I can usually tell at this stage if it is going to work or not...if I'm not sure, I'll erase and try again before I get in too deep. Second pass, since I am inking myself, I'll pencil things just tight enough so I know where I am going. Using various markers and brush markers (hello Jetpens.com!) I'll ink in all the line work and then erase the pencils. Now it's gray marker time (copic cool grays here). I do all of the gray tones and then fill in the solid blacks at the very end so they don't get grayed out or smudged in the process. Finally, I punch in some white details here and there with white gouache paint and a white gel pen. There you go, all my secrets revealedRelated content

I like your stuff. It's pretty tight. You forgot the very first step of at least 5 years of practice.

Interesting to get a glance into how you work and see the piece take shape. And, once again, you did a fantastic job on this commission, I love it!

What brand of white gel pen do you use? The ones I find always seem to let the under color bleed through.

gelly roll. They sell them at Michael's, and Hobby Lobby type stores...I guess most folks use them for scrapbooking these days.
