Description Here's a small quickie painting I did to try out the new Golden's Open Acrylics. These are new space age acrylic paints that mimic the properties of oil paints. Gotta say, I like 'em.

This is beautiful.  Where can I learn to paint like this?

not sure 'where' but I know 'how'...just practice. For these looser looking paintings I work from a photo I find online or from a magazine, sketch it out loosely and then paint it pretty quickly using a wide flat bristle brush. I have heard a good rule of thumb for getting that 'brushy' look is to use a brush that seems just a bit too big for what you think you should use!

Excellent work! Mind if I ask you something?
I am designing a booklet for Golden Open Acrylics as part of my graphic design class and I'm looking for some nice samples of Open Acrylic Paintings. Would it be alright with you if I used this painting in my booklet?

Are these the acrylics that also aren't supposed to change colours as they dry?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MichaelDooney In reply to bolsterstone [2012-08-29 13:40:42 +0000 UTC]

the colors stay true. Most modern acrylics don't change colors as they dry though.

That's good to know. (The darkening due to latex polymerization was an unavoidable problem for many years.)

I think this gets a lot of love here because it isn't digital While I use the computer all the time for art, I still love using real world paint and brushes.

That's a quickie?!!!

You know, it reminds me (God knows why)
to the girls on the covers
of those old mystery and detectives books
(Perry Mason, Dashil Hammet,etc.)

I really like it

Cheers from Sunny Mexico

How are liking the OPEN paints? I rep for Golden...I know in my territory, artists of the traditional painting disciplines are loving them. Nice work!

MichaelDooney In reply to kimdunham [2011-03-04 21:05:59 +0000 UTC]

I've been a Golden's fan for years. Their acrylics are heads and shoulders above any of the other brands. The Open paints are great too. I've tried several brands of water soluable oils in the past and never really liked the consistency, but the Open paints are very smooth and if anyone out there is looking for a faster drying "non-oil paint-oil painting' medium this is definitely it.
How's that? Does my rave get me a Golden's tee shirt now?

MichaelDooney In reply to MARINEMANTIS3YE [2010-03-15 14:19:59 +0000 UTC]

like most brands it depends on the color, but most are in the $5-$6 a tube range I think.

Wow,nice work. I am going to have to try these, have been using Reotech economy student paints and the pigment is quite poor if Golden's new paints mimic oils then this could be what I am looking for.

stripedwine [2010-03-12 19:37:15 +0000 UTC]

Ooh, tell me more about these paints? Do they still dry a completely different color?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MichaelDooney In reply to stripedwine [2010-03-12 23:57:48 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't say that, in fact Golden's acrylics in general are superior to most other paints out there, they have a super creamy consistency and tons of pigment.

stripedwine In reply to MichaelDooney [2010-03-13 18:58:13 +0000 UTC]

Yeah? Hmm... I just haven't painted with acrylic in YEARS. You think it's worth dabbling in again?

I think it's a good idea to revisit old materials and techniques from time to time...you'll see them with new eyes.
