I don't care if they ship Widowtracer, but personally it belongs with McHanzo and Reaper76. Neither of those ships makes sense and it will never be canon, even if the voice actor of Mccree wants McHanzo to happen.

Figures Tracer, practically the mascot of the game, was the LGBT character they mentioned they had. Can't say I'm shocked or anything, but I actually thought it was gonna be Zarya (though maybe she was way too much of an obvious choice?).

No, from the day (or the day after, can't remember) they announced Overwatch at Blizzcon, they already confirmed that some characters were LGBT+ back then, and it was 2 years ago. So new characters might be LGBT+ but there were definitely old ones that are too.

It seems that I was wrong and it was confirmed during the Blizzcon 2015, not the Blizzcon 2014 (I watched them both so my memory was a little fuzzy apparently), here's a source:

Regardless, this was 6 months before the game was even released, and they confirmed to have already planned for multiple LGBT+ characters at the time, who would be revealed when it was appropriate in the story (a Christmas story obviously being a good place for such a reveal).

They still should have confirmed Tracer's sexuality at the start. I mean, you can't underestimate the attention spans of people, what with everything that's going on in the world, all the video games that have peoples' attention, etc. It's funny when that it states "Characters like Mei and Zarya have already given me hope for radically variant body types" when Mei just wear a thick outer layer and Zarya actually has an idealistic body type. Just imagine all of the body-building competitions she could win.

No they shouldn't. Does anyone every introduce a new game character and say: btw they're totally straight? No they don't. And why stop with sexuality, should we also issue a warning to explain that they've omnivorous or vegetarians? If their hair color is natural or isn't? If they wear nipples piercings or not? And what does the attention span of anyone have to do with it?

WTH does that have to do with anything? But to answer that, Mei has a round face and both her and Zarya differs from the usual standards of beauty for female. They went from a lack of diversity specifically for female characters to a more balanced "everyone is pretty unrealistic but at least both male and female have a good degree of variety now". We also have Ana who's old (that's cool), but I agree that they can do more. On top of that, it doesn't actually matters what Mei looks like under her clothes because she always wear them anyway, so the only influence she has through her appearance is with the clothes on. How often do you see super conventionally pretty film female leads wearing clothes that makes them look fat?

Oh I know that, but it doesn't make much sense. I get the whole, "Oh yeah that's hot, two women trying to kill each other, fighting each other, ect" thing might be a turn on, but for me, its like, "wtf, no? they were trying.to.kill.each other, hello???"

It's not (only, I'm sure it's part of it) about it being hot. People don't write elaborate slow burn FF because it's hot. The point is as Drhobo said, that they're opposite which makes for a really interesting dynamic. Add to that Widowmaker is a tragic figure who suffered brainwashing and it makes it even more popular. As far as fan art goes, there's also a dynamic between them in the shorts (even if it's an antagonistic one) that translates well, because it adds context to the fan art. A same pose is made more interesting by the relation they have in the official medias even if that relation isn't consistent with the pairing.
Those kind of pairings are actually pretty popular because they have an added element of angst that can't really exist otherwise (see also other F/F pairings such as Katara and Azula, Hermione and Bellatrix, Kim Possible and what's her name)
