To be fair he was supposed to be a guest in MKX, McFarlane gave them permission and everything, bu tEd Boon wasn't told they had his consent until too late into development.

It's sad that it took this long for Spawn to be in a Netherealm game and even then they only did it because they see that MK isn't selling as well as Netherealm games usually do for obvious reasons so they figured. "Oh crap how can we squeeze money from our customers so that they will buy our game because of our creative failures...oh I know we'll bring back fan favorites and bring in guests people have wanted for years now!"

Todd McFarlene had a plan set up on how he was going to market Spawn again.
And while he gave NRS his blessing to use the character, it was his call when they can use him. And be real, there's no way people were going to accept Spawn being in an Injustice game and not Mortal Kombat.
Besides pushing the comics, he wanted to wait until he get the movie rolling before he releases toys & games so that everything will be relevant within time frame. Unfortunately his movie has hit a snag recently and he most likely gave the okay for his character's inclusion beforehand thinking his initial plan will go smoothly.

Are you joking? The demand for Spawn was huge in Injustice 2, and personally honestly I would rather have had him there than in Mortal Kombat.

MK 11 isn't selling well? Damn, I didn't knew that. As much as I would love to enjoy MK11 and their guest characters, it is a hard pass for me. Well unless if it goes down for a lower price, but I sure wish Netherealm Studios learn their lesson when it comes with those lootboxes and microtransactions.Β

Well it's not selling poorly but it's definitely not selling as well as Netherealm games usually do. This is not only due to the microtransactions and lootboxes, but the completely hypocritic censorship, injecting politics when it wasn't wanted, shitting on their loyal fanbase for criticizing creative decisions, been caught deleting negative reviews, figuratively smelling their own farts during the Kombat Kasts telling us the fans what characters are amazing and who aren't as well as so much other crap.

Meanwhile for me apart from the HBO show,live action film,Β and the SNES title as I never read a single issue of the Spawn comic book, those have been my only exposure to Al Simmons. I am glad finally he will playabe in a video game after such a very long haitus. It is most unfortunate Spawn will be a guest in the most controversial Mortal Kombat title to dateΒ and not due to blood and gore, but thanks to terrible gamplay mechanics and unnecessary changes. I don't have any hope the planned movie in the works will see the light of day.

I hear ya. Nice to see Spawn, Shang Tsung from the older movie, and a couple of older or unknown 2 characters announced. I'm maybe going to guess one of the 2 is going to be Joker from the DC comics. Gameplay mechanics isn't good either? Ah man. Well one of these day, I have to take a look at the story myself, so I don't if that is also going to be a con depending if I can overlook the positives.Β

What I mean is that lootboxes and micro transactions reflect poorly on the gameplay. My bad as I was not thinking straight. Rumor has it that Ash Williams, Bruce Campbell's most famous character, and not the Mass Effect woman of the same name might be a guest since he is another character who weilds a chainsaw and Leatherface has already been used. Shang Tsung would not want to pick a fight with Spawn that is for sure. Not to mention he cannot steal Al's soul as he does not have one. I hope Netherrealms Studios picks a less obvious DC character for once.

Ah, okay! I get ya. I just saw the trailer again and I love to see Ash Williams in the game. That and heard that the Terminator will join alongside with him. Only time will tell, but I'll look forward to it!

Funny enough you bring up the Terminator as it was last seen in one of those WWE 2K titles as a guest. I cannnot remember exactly which one it was. Before that, it was fought as a boss along with Spiderman, Bataman and Godzilla in the Japanese version of Revenge Of Shinobi for the Sega Genesis.
