Description
After a long quest in search of this character, employing all kinds of techniques, I ended up with a fully detailed and textured 3d model of our little protagonist. This project definitely pushed me to sharpen my 3d skills! So happy how this one turned out on the big screen, big thanks to Tim Burton and Rick Heinrichs for the great collaboration. Beautiful model, but I gotta ask -- did Dumbo REALLY need a remake, especially by someone like Tim Burton?

XD You didn't gotta ask that. Dumbo may not have needed a remake, but no one knows misfits and the circus better than Tim Burton.

Even after years in the Hollywood grind, you are still producing excellent work while pushing your skill to new heights. Beautifully clean image and most importantly...captures a really sweet spirit. Truly gifted designer!

I watched it yesterday, it wasn't quite my cup of tea but one thing you could say was Dumbo looked great and there was a lot of sniffling going on in the cinema.Β

Dumbo was adorable in the film. Personally I thought the film had great production design, but could've been a teensy bit better, nevertheless I enjoyed the film.

The human eyes destroy it for me. I was shocked when I saw the trailer, and I don't understand why 10 years ago animals could have animal characteristics but now they nearly in every movie have to imbue human facial things. To be "cuter"? Then bigger black elephant eyes would have done, too.
It's like just making Dumbo having human ear shapes. It's not a critique particular at your style , as long as you did it because you like it-but a critique at the media in general because they try to push it on every plush , doll, disney princess and movies having distorted faces (thinking of Ice Age.....)
And there is no poll, no proof of the masses of society that they prefer these faces over alternative. Especially they try to reason it with "Kids find it rather appealing" - as someone who worked with kids, that argument is illogical and pointless and wrong

It's true that most elephants have dark brown eyes, although there are some animals, such as dogs, where their owners will look lovingly at them and claim they have "the most human-looking eyes."Β I think the designers in the film were trying to stay true to the cartoon (and he had blue eyes in that), though for some people it doesn't translate well.Β They were merely trying to create a 3-dimensional version of Dumbo that also had semi-realistic elephant characteristics.Β How well the film will do is up to the audience.

no no that is not my issue,Β but more the "shape " of the eye. in the old movie it was a typical cartoony shape. but thisΒ Β Β shape does just look wrong to me.Β
also I saw a huge lack of perspective. Like the iris should also change with perspective but in the trailer on many shots (also here on this ) it's facing towards the viewer, not the butterfly and won't look flat (I hope you get what I mean). I read that the movie lacked of budget and tried to save t hings but xD I don't know why they would save on the facial graphic

CGI is one of the most expensive things to use in a film, particularly one that is of a moderate or big budget.Β The technicians have to work for months on custom, moving 3-D models and carefully blend them together with the live-action actors, and it's a delicate process.Β Sometimes if the animators aren't top-notch, you get an image that looks more cartoony than realistic, which is probably what the problem was here.
